Panleukopenia is a serious viral disease caused by a parvovirus similar to that of domestic cats. In the fossa, an endemic carnivore from Madagascar related to the Eupleridae family, this infection mainly affects young animals, particularly in captivity or in care centers where contact with domestic or stray cats is possible. The virus attacks cells that multiply rapidly, notably those of the intestine, bone marrow and, in fetuses or very young individuals, the brain. This disease is considered a serious threat to the conservation of the species, classified as vulnerable, because captive and wild populations have had little exposure to this virus and therefore do not always have natural immunity.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by parvovirus, a very resistant virus in the environment. In the fossa, it is probably a strain related to feline parvovirus or its variants, capable of crossing the species barrier between carnivores.
Young fossas, whose immune system is still immature, are the most vulnerable.\n\nThe absence of previous vaccination or prior contact with the virus greatly increases the risk, which is common in this species with little natural exposure to this type of pathogen.\n\nProximity to domestic or stray cats, in zoos or in natural environments close to homes, constitutes a documented risk factor.\n\nStress, promiscuity in captivity and a weakened immune system by another disease also favors infection.
Transmission
The virus is transmitted by direct contact with the feces, vomit or secretions of an infected animal. It can also survive for a long time on contaminated surfaces, equipment, hands or clothing, and be transmitted indirectly this way. Contact with domestic or stray cats carrying the virus is considered a significant risk factor for fossas living in captivity or on the outskirts of inhabited areas.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on the suggestive clinical signs (vomiting, diarrhea, sudden drop in fitness) associated with a blood test showing a marked drop in white blood cells. Specific virus detection tests (antigen detection or molecular tests) can confirm the diagnosis, relying if necessary on the protocols used in domestic cats, adapted to this closely related species.
Treatment
There is no specific antiviral treatment. The treatment aims to support the animal: rehydration, nutritional support, antiemetics to limit vomiting, and broad-spectrum antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections favored by the fall in immune defenses. Close monitoring in a specialized environment is essential.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
