Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by nematodes (roundworms) that infest the woodcock's digestive tract, particularly the gizzard and intestines.

Several nematode genera may be responsible depending on the region and habitats frequented by the bird.

Infection most commonly occurs by ingesting nematode larvae present in soil, water, or on earthworms and other prey consumed by the woodcock, which feeds by probing moist ground with its long bill.

Young woodcock of the current year are more susceptible because their immune system is not fully mature. Damp, muddy habitats rich in earthworms favour the presence and transmission of infective larvae. Prior weakening of the bird—from a harsh winter, food shortage, injury, or other illness—increases susceptibility to parasitism. High concentrations of birds in a migratory stopover area may also promote transmission. In captivity or in a wildlife care facility, stress and overcrowding can worsen infestation.

Transmission

Transmission occurs by oral ingestion of nematode larvae present in the environment (soil, mud) or carried by prey such as earthworms.

This is not a bird-to-bird contagious disease through direct contact, but rather environmental contamination.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Diagnosis rests on a complete veterinary examination of the bird, including observation of its general condition and weight. Analysis of droppings—a faecal examination under the microscope—can detect worm eggs. In certain cases, particularly in a dead bird, examination of the digestive tract at autopsy confirms the diagnosis by directly visualising the parasites.

Treatment

Treatment relies on administration of an appropriate antiparasitic medication, prescribed and dosed only by a veterinarian competent in wildlife. Nutritional support and rehydration may be needed to help the bird recover. Treatment must always be supervised by a professional, as the woodcock is a wild species sensitive and protected during certain periods.

Prevention

In wild birds, direct prevention is difficult since this is a natural cycle. In a care facility or in captivity, it is recommended to maintain strict hygiene of aviaries and floors, avoid overcrowding, and provide appropriate nutrition to limit weakening of rescued birds. Regular veterinary checks of captive birds allow earlier detection.

Possible complications

A heavy infestation left untreated can lead to severe weight loss, dehydration, and general weakness that may result in the bird's death, especially during migration or difficult weather conditions. The weakened bird also becomes more vulnerable to predators and other infections.

When to see a veterinarian

A rescued woodcock shows visible weight loss or leanness when the breastbone is felt. The bird displays diarrhoea or persistent abnormal droppings. The woodcock is lethargic, no longer responds normally, or cannot fly. Worms are visible in the bird's droppings. Any weakened wild bird found should be taken promptly to a wildlife care facility or a veterinarian.

Prognosis

The outlook depends on how heavily the bird is infested and its general condition when treatment begins.

A lightly parasitized woodcock that receives proper care can make a full recovery.

However, a bird that is severely weakened or heavily infested has a more guarded outlook, especially in the wild without intervention.
