Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common condition in Cuvier's gazelle, an antelope native to North Africa that is now threatened and often kept in reserves or captivity for conservation purposes.

These parasites live in the stomach or intestine of the animal. They feed on blood or nutrients and can, in large numbers, seriously weaken the animal, particularly young individuals and those stressed by captivity or drought.

This disease is closely monitored in conservation programs because Cuvier's gazelle is a protected species, and massive parasitic infestations can compromise reintroduction efforts.

When infestation becomes significant, progressive loss of appetite develops, weight loss even if the animal is eating normally, and the coat becomes dull and less silky.

Diarrhea or softer-than-normal stools may appear. The animal seems tired, less active, and may isolate itself from the group.

In severe cases, the mucous membranes (gums, inner eyelids) become pale due to anemia caused by blood-feeding worms. The belly may appear swollen in heavily infested young animals.

Young gazelles are most vulnerable: marked growth retardation can develop if infestation is not treated promptly.

Causes and risk factors

Several families of roundworms (nematodes) may be involved, notably gastrointestinal strongyles similar to those affecting wild sheep and goats, as well as whipworms or ascarids depending on the region.

Eggs from these parasites are passed in the feces of infested animals. They develop in the external environment (soil, moist vegetation) and are then ingested by another animal grazing near contaminated areas.

In enclosures or reserves with limited space, the cycle repeats rapidly because gazelles often graze in the same spot, increasing the parasitic burden of the soil.

Captivity or semi-captivity in a confined space promotes the buildup of parasite eggs on pasture.

Young animals, whose immune systems are still immature, are more susceptible than adults.

Stress (transport, environmental change, high stocking density), poor or unbalanced nutrition, and periods of drought that concentrate animals around water sources also increase the risk of severe infestation.

Immunity weakened by another disease or by pregnancy makes the animal more vulnerable as well.

Transmission

Infection occurs via ingestion when the animal grazes on grass or drinks water contaminated with parasite eggs or larvae present in the feces of infested animals. Direct contact between individuals is not necessary.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Treatment

Environmental management (enclosure cleaning, reducing stocking density) always accompanies drug treatment to prevent rapid reinfection.

Prevention relies mainly on good enclosure management: pasture rotation, regular dung removal, and avoiding overcrowding.

Regular parasite checks (faecal analysis) allow monitoring of infestation levels in the herd and treatment only when necessary, which also limits the risk of parasite resistance to drugs.

Quality nutrition and access to clean water strengthen the animal's natural resistance to parasites.

In conservation programmes, quarantine and systematic parasite screening of newcomers before joining the group are essential.

Possible complications

Severe untreated infestation can lead to significant anaemia, irreversible growth retardation in young animals, or even death in the most serious cases, especially during periods of stress or food shortage.

Weakened animals also become more susceptible to other infectious diseases.
