The disease is transmitted by ticks present in the natural environment or during captivity in enclosures. Supportive treatment often accompanies this: fluids to counteract dehydration, and in severe cases blood transfusion may be considered. Tick control must accompany treatment to prevent immediate reinfection.

Prevention
