It is an infestation of the digestive tract by nematodes—thread-like worms that live in the stomach (abomasum) and intestines. This parasitic disease is considered one of the main causes of illness in wild ungulates kept in captivity, particularly in young animals and those weakened or stressed by confinement.

Clinical signs are often mild at first, making detection difficult without veterinary examination. As infestation worsens, progressive weight loss appears despite sometimes-maintained appetite, soft stools or diarrhea, a dull and dry coat, and general fatigue with reduced activity. The mucous membranes (gums, inner eyelids) may become pale due to anemia caused by blood-feeding worms such as Haemonchus. In young animals, growth retardation is common. In severe cases, the animal may develop swelling under the jaw (edema) linked to loss of blood protein.

Causes and risk factors

This disease is caused by roundworms (nematodes) that live in the stomach and intestines of the gazelle. The genera most frequently reported in captive or wild gazelles and antelopes include Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Ostertagia, Cooperia, and Trichuris. These parasites lay eggs that are shed in feces; these eggs develop into larvae in the environment (soil, vegetation), then are ingested by the animal while grazing or consuming contaminated feed, completing the cycle.

Young gazelles, particularly after weaning, are more vulnerable because their immunity is still incomplete. Captivity in a confined space, with high animal density and repeated contamination of the ground by droppings, greatly increases the risk. Warm, humid climate favors the survival of larvae on vegetation. Stress from transport, a change of environment, or unbalanced nutrition weakens the animal's defenses and worsens infestation.

Transmission

Transmission occurs through indirect fecal-oral route: the animal ingests larvae present on grass, soil, or water contaminated by feces from infested animals. Direct contact between individuals is not necessary, but close confinement in enclosures promotes rapid cross-contamination of the entire group.

Treatment

Treatment is based on administration of antiparasitic drugs (dewormers) from different chemical families, chosen by the veterinarian according to the type of worm identified and the herd context, to limit risks of resistance. Supportive care may be added in cases of anemia or marked weakness, such as nutritional supplementation. Management of the environment (cleaning, enclosure rotation) always accompanies medication to prevent rapid reinfection.

Periodic veterinary check-ups with fecal analysis help to time antiparasitic treatments appropriately rather than treat routinely, which also limits the risk of worms developing resistance to medications. Balanced nutrition and minimal stress also help maintain good natural defenses in the animal.
