In dorcas gazelles, this disease can affect both animals living in their natural habitat and those kept in captivity in zoos or wildlife reserves, particularly in North Africa and the Middle East where the species is found.

The severity of the disease varies depending on the animal's age, general health status, and the type of parasite involved.

Clinical signs appear after an incubation period that varies, most often from a few days to two weeks after an infected tick bite.

Fever, marked lethargy, and loss of appetite are typically observed.

Destruction of red blood cells leads to anemia, which shows as pale mucous membranes, particularly visible in the gums.

In more advanced cases, yellowish discoloration of the mucous membranes (icterus) may develop, along with dark-colored urine.

The animal may also show significant fatigue, progressive weight loss, and sometimes faster or labored breathing in cases of severe anemia.

Some animals, particularly young or weakened individuals, may develop a peracute form with very rapid progression.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by intra-erythrocytic parasitic protozoans (parasites that live inside red blood cells), mainly species of the genera Babesia and Theileria.

Once in the body, piroplasms invade red blood cells, multiply within them, and then burst the cells, causing anemia.

Dorcas gazelles living in areas heavily infested with ticks are most at risk.

Young animals, weakened subjects, those under stress, or carriers of other diseases are more likely to develop severe disease.

Stress from captivity, transport, or environmental change can trigger clinical signs in an animal silently carrying the parasite.

Warm and humid seasons, which favour tick proliferation, increase the risk of transmission.

Transmission

Transmission occurs exclusively through bites from infected ticks. There is no direct transmission between animals without passage through this vector. Vertical transmission (from mother to fetus during pregnancy) has been documented in certain animal species infected with this type of parasite.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Tick control is the primary prevention measure: regular external antiparasitic treatments, frequent coat inspection, and environmental management to reduce tick populations (clearing vegetation, paddock management).

In captive facilities, quarantine and examination of new animals before introduction help prevent the arrival of infected ticks.

Regular veterinary monitoring of captive or semi-captive populations is recommended in endemic areas.

Possible complications

Untreated severe anaemia can lead to multiorgan failure, particularly kidney damage related to massive haemoglobin release into the bloodstream.
