The common genet (Genetta genetta) is a small wild carnivorous mammal, sometimes kept in captivity or observed in periurban areas in Tunisia. Like many small carnivores, it can harbour roundworms in its digestive tract, also called nematodes. These parasites live in the stomach or intestines and feed at the expense of the animal. A light infection often goes unnoticed, but a high parasite burden can cause real digestive disease, especially in young genets or weakened animals.

The most common signs are digestive disorders: diarrhoea, sometimes chronic, occasional vomiting, and a belly that may appear swollen or sensitive to touch.
The animal loses weight gradually despite sometimes maintaining or even increasing appetite.
The coat becomes dull and loses its shine.
In young individuals, stunted growth and a sickly appearance compared to littermates are often observed.
In heavy infestations, adult worms may be visible directly in the faeces or in vomit.
General lethargy and decreased activity often accompany severe cases.

Causes and risk factors
Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms encompasses several families of nematodes that can affect small wild carnivores, notably ascarids (related to the genera Toxascaris or Toxocara) and sometimes hookworms. Adult worms live attached to the digestive wall or free in the intestinal lumen, where they lay eggs that are shed in faeces. Infection most often occurs through ingestion of eggs present in contaminated surroundings, or consumption of prey (rodents, insects) already carrying larvae.
Young genets are particularly vulnerable because their immune system is still immature.
Close contact, whether in captivity or in a shared burrow, promotes cross-contamination through eggs present in the environment.
A soiled, damp, or poorly maintained environment increases the survival of parasitic eggs.
Diet based on uncontrolled wild prey (rodents, insects) represents an important natural source of infestation.
A weakened general condition, concurrent illness, or chronic stress makes the animal more susceptible to severe infestation.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly by the faecal-oral route: ingestion of parasite eggs present in contaminated surroundings, or consumption of prey (rodents, insects) carrying infective larvae.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian suspects digestive parasitism based on clinical signs, then confirms the diagnosis through microscopic examination of faeces (faecal flotation) to identify and detect roundworm eggs.
In some cases, additional testing such as a blood test may be suggested to assess the overall impact of infestation on the body.
Treatment
Treatment is based on administration of antiparasitic agents (wormers) effective against roundworms, selected and dosed by the veterinarian according to the animal's weight and condition.
Nutritional support and rehydration may be necessary in cases of significant diarrhoea or vomiting.
Treatment is sometimes repeated after a few weeks to eliminate parasites that escaped the first dose.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies on good hygiene of the living space when the animal is kept in captivity: regular cleaning, prompt removal of faeces, and disinfection of floors and bedding.
Regular veterinary check-ups with faecal examination allow detection of infestation before marked symptoms appear.
In captive animals, a species-adapted preventive worming programme, established in consultation with a veterinarian, can be implemented.
Limiting access to uncontrolled wild prey reduces the risk of contamination.
Possible complications
Untreated massive infestation can lead to severe dehydration, persistent growth retardation in young animals, or even intestinal obstruction in extreme cases where a mass of worms blocks the digestive tract.
In severely debilitated animals, parasitic infestation may worsen concurrent diseases and compromise survival.

Transmission to humans
Some roundworms found in carnivore intestines, particularly Toxascaris and Toxocara ascarids, carry a limited zoonotic risk if infective eggs are accidentally ingested by humans, especially children. Hand hygiene and regular monitoring of the captive animal's faeces reduce this risk, though direct transmission to humans is poorly documented specifically in genets.
Prognosis
The outlook is generally good when infestation is detected and treated promptly, with complete recovery of the animal's general condition in several weeks.
Without treatment, the outlook worsens in young animals or already weakened individuals, with a risk of severe digestive complications.
Frequently asked questions
Can the genet transmit these worms to my dog or cat?
Some digestive nematodes are shared among multiple carnivore species. Direct or indirect contact (through feces or a shared environment) may theoretically favor cross-transmission, hence the importance of strict hygiene if several animals live together.
How can I tell if my genet has worms without taking it to the vet?
There is no reliable method at home. Only a stool examination performed in a veterinary laboratory can confirm the presence and type of parasites.
Should a captive genet systematically be dewormed?
A preventive deworming protocol may be recommended by the veterinarian, but it must be tailored specifically to the species and health status of the animal, without self-medication.
Are roundworms always visible in stool?
No, most light to moderate infestations show no worms visible to the naked eye. Only a massive infestation makes adult worms apparent.
