Feline panleukopenia is a serious viral disease affecting all felids, including wildcats (Felis silvestris). It is caused by a parvovirus that is highly resistant in the environment. This virus primarily attacks cells that divide rapidly, such as those in the intestines, bone marrow, and in fetuses or very young kittens, those in the brain. The name "panleukopenia" comes from the dramatic drop in white blood cells it causes, which severely weakens the immune system. In wildcats, this disease is particularly dreaded because it can wipe out entire populations, especially in areas where contact with stray domestic cats is possible.

Signs often appear suddenly. High fever, marked depression, and loss of appetite are observed. Vomiting and diarrhea, sometimes streaked with blood, develop rapidly, causing severe dehydration. The animal appears withdrawn, curled up, and may hide. The abdomen may be painful on palpation. In kittens infected before birth or shortly after, the virus can damage the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance: affected young cats show tremors and a wobbly gait as soon as they begin to move. In the most severe cases, death may occur within a few days, sometimes even before clear digestive signs appear.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by a feline parvovirus, very similar to the virus responsible for canine parvovirus. This virus is extremely resistant in the external environment: it can survive several months or even more than a year on contaminated surfaces (floors, cages, equipment, hands). It spreads through direct contact with excretions from an infected animal (feces, vomit, urine) or indirectly through a contaminated environment, insects, or improperly disinfected material.
Young animals, especially recently weaned kittens, are most vulnerable, as are pregnant females. Lack of vaccination among domestic cat populations nearby increases the risk of virus spreading to wild populations. Close contact, stress, poor nutrition, and an immune system weakened by other infections also promote the development of severe forms.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through the oral-fecal route: the virus, present in large amounts in feces, contaminates the environment and is then ingested by another animal. A pregnant female that is infected can also transmit the virus to her fetuses, causing miscarriages, stillbirths, or cerebellar damage in survivors. The high resistance of the virus in the environment promotes its persistence and spread, particularly in areas of high cat density or contact with unvaccinated domestic cats.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on clinical signs (fever, vomiting, diarrhea, sudden lethargy) combined with a marked drop in white blood cells visible on a blood test. Rapid tests for detecting viral antigens in faeces, similar to those used in dogs for parvovirus, can confirm diagnosis. Analysis at a specialized laboratory allows for more precise confirmation if needed.
Treatment
There is no specific antiviral treatment. Management focuses on supporting the animal: rehydration, nutritional support, treatment for nausea, protection of the digestive lining, and antibiotics to prevent or treat secondary bacterial infections favored by the drop in immune defenses. In severe cases, hospitalization with intravenous fluids is often necessary.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Vaccination of surrounding domestic cats remains the most effective way to limit virus circulation to wild cat populations. In conservation programs or captive settings, vaccination of the animals involved may be considered under veterinary supervision. Thorough disinfection of equipment and facilities with products effective against parvoviruses, along with limiting contact between stray domestic cats and wild populations, also helps reduce risks.

In wild cats, vaccination is only feasible in particular settings, such as conservation, reintroduction, or captive breeding programs, always under specialized veterinary supervision, as trapping and handling wild animals carry their own risks and constraints.
Possible complications
Complications include severe dehydration, shock, widespread secondary bacterial infections (septicemia) due to immune system collapse, and death in the most severe cases. In kittens infected during the perinatal period, permanent neurological damage linked to cerebellar involvement can persist throughout life, manifesting as balance and coordination disorders.
