Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in thrushes, whether wild, captive, or in rehabilitation centers. Thread-like worms settle in the bird's stomach or intestine and feed at its expense.

This parasitic infection is often asymptomatic in healthy adult birds, but it can become serious in young birds, weakened birds, or those living in groups in confined spaces such as aviaries.

Feathers become dull and ruffled, the bird appears depressed and less active.

Is a wild thrush carrying parasitic worms necessarily sick?

No. A low level of parasites is often tolerated without visible symptoms in a healthy wild bird. The problem arises mainly in cases of heavy parasite load or when the bird is weakened.

Can you give a dewormer to a thrush without veterinary advice?
