Signs are often subtle at first, especially in adults. In heavy infestations, the bird becomes listless, eats less, and egg production may drop in breeding birds. Sometimes whitish roundworms are visible directly in the droppings. Mortality can occur in heavily infested or otherwise weakened young guinea fowl.

Causes and risk factors

The condition is caused by nematodes (roundworms) that parasitize the digestive tract. Eggs from these worms are shed in the droppings of carrier birds and contaminate the soil, litter, and water. Other guinea fowl become infested by pecking directly at infective eggs on the ground, or by ingesting an intermediate host (such as an earthworm or insect) carrying larvae, depending on the parasite species involved.

Rearing birds on litter or in outdoor systems strongly promotes contact with parasite eggs present in the environment. High stocking density, damp and poorly maintained litter, lack of paddock rotation, and poor hygiene increase the risk. Young guinea fowl, whose immunity is still maturing, are more susceptible than adults. General weakness in the bird, unbalanced nutrition, or other concurrent diseases increase the severity of infestation.

Treatment uses broad-spectrum antiparasitic drugs (dewormers) suitable for poultry, prescribed by the veterinarian. Treatment of the entire flock is generally recommended rather than individual treatment, since environmental contamination affects the whole group. This treatment must be combined with thorough cleaning of the shed and bedding to prevent rapid reinfestation.

Prevention

Prevention relies mainly on good management of the rearing environment: regular litter maintenance keeping it dry and clean, cleaning and disinfection of housing between flocks, and rotation of outdoor paddocks to limit accumulation of parasite eggs in the soil. Preventive antiparasitic treatments may be established according to a schedule set with the veterinarian, particularly before the laying period or when introducing new birds.

Possible complications

Severe untreated infestation can result in lasting poor growth, general weakness that makes the bird more susceptible to other infectious diseases, and in severe cases in young guinea fowl, death. Prolonged drop in egg production can also affect farm profitability.
