Avian coccidiosis is a parasitic disease caused by small microscopic organisms called coccidia, which multiply in the cells of the bird's intestine.\n\nIn the buzzard (Buteo rufinus), it is mainly the genus Caryospora that is involved, a parasite common in wild and captive raptors.\n\nThis disease mainly affects young birds, weakened, stressed or recently captured birds, particularly in birds of prey. raptor and falconry care centers.

The signs are often discreet at the beginning, which makes the disease difficult to spot without a veterinary examination.\n\nWe can observe diarrhea sometimes tinged with blood, progressive weight loss despite a preserved or reduced appetite, dull and ruffled plumage, and general fatigue with a less active or less lively bird.\n\nIn severe forms, particularly in young buzzards, marked dehydration and significant depression can appear quickly, sometimes with skin lesions around the cloaca linked to Caryospora in certain raptors.\n\nAsymptomatic cases exist: the bird carries the parasite without showing any visible signs, but can disseminate it in the environment.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is due to the multiplication of coccidian protozoa (such as Caryospora spp., Eimeria spp. or Isospora spp.) in the cells that line the bird's intestine.\n\nThese parasites have a life cycle that includes an internal phase in the bird and an external phase in the environment, where they form resistance forms called oocysts, which are very resistant and capable of surviving for a long time in the soil, droppings or contaminated water.\n\nThe bird becomes infected by ingesting these oocysts, often through contaminated prey, soiled litter, a resting station or a feeder contaminated with droppings.

Young buzzards are more vulnerable because their immune system is still immature.\n\nStress, whether linked to capture, transport, injury, prolonged captivity or cohabitation with other birds, favors the appearance of the disease in carriers without symptoms.\n\nA dirty, humid environment, with accumulation of droppings, or a diet based on contaminated prey also increase the risk.\n\nBirds already weakened by another disease, malnutrition or wound are more likely to develop a severe clinical form.

Transmission

Transmission occurs via the fecal-oral route: the bird ingests oocysts present in the environment, on prey, in water or on surfaces soiled by contaminated droppings.\n\nThe risk is higher in captivity or in care centers where the density of birds is high, as well as in young raptors recently taken from the nest or stressed by an injury.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Treatment

Treatment is based on the administration of specific antiparasitics (anticoccidials) prescribed and dosed only by a veterinarian, adapted to the species and condition of the bird.\n\nGeneral support is often associated: rehydration, food supplementation and rest in a calm and clean environment to promote recovery.\n\nCleaning and disinfection of the bird's environment are an integral part of the treatment, to avoid immediate reinfestation.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention is based above all on hygiene: regular cleaning of aviaries, resting stations and feeders, rapid elimination of droppings, and disinfection with products effective against oocysts.\n\nIt is recommended to avoid an overdensity of birds in the same space and to control the quality of the prey given as food.\n\nRegular veterinary monitoring with examination of droppings, particularly for raptors in care centers or falconries, makes it possible to detect a infestation before serious symptoms appear.

Possible complications

Without treatment, coccidiosis can lead to severe dehydration, significant weight loss and general weakening which make the bird more vulnerable to other infections.\n\nIn young buzzards, severe forms can lead to death, particularly in the event of delayed treatment or massive infestation.\n\nChronic intestinal lesions can also permanently disrupt the absorption of nutrients, delaying the growth of young birds.
