Gastrointestinal parasitism from roundworms (nematodes) is a very common disease in saigas, a wild antelope native to the steppes of Central Asia. Small worms settle in the stomach and intestines of the animal. They feed at the expense of the host and damage the digestive tract. This disease mainly affects young saigas and weakened animals, particularly when large herds gather on pastures. It is considered an important factor in mortality, especially when combined with other stressors such as food shortage or cold.

Parasitized animals gradually lose weight despite sometimes retaining an appetite initially, which then decreases. The coat becomes dull and rough. Diarrhea or soft stools may appear, sometimes with visible worms present. Young animals show marked growth retardation. In severe cases, dehydration, profound lethargy and general weakness develop, which can lead to death, especially if the animal is already weakened by cold, hunger or another disease.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by several species of nematodes (roundworms) that parasitize the abomasum (the stomach) and intestine, notably from genera similar to those found in other wild antelopes and ruminants of the steppes. The eggs of these parasites are shed in feces, develop in the external environment, and are then ingested by saigas while grazing.
Young animals, pregnant or nursing females, and already weakened animals (malnutrition, cold exposure, other diseases) are the most vulnerable. Overcrowding on pastures, disrupted migrations, and droughts that concentrate herds around water sources significantly increase the risk of massive infection.
Transmission
Contamination occurs through the oral route, when grazing on grass or drinking water contaminated with larvae from the feces of infested animals. The cycle is favored by moisture and mild temperatures, and by the gathering of herds in restricted grazing areas.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on microscopic examination of fecal samples to look for worm eggs, performed by a veterinarian or laboratory specializing in wildlife. The animal's body condition, behavior, and history (access to water, herd density) are also considered when assessing the severity of infestation.
Treatment
Treatment, when possible in a wild or captive animal, relies on administering antiparasitic medications from the broad-spectrum dewormer family, under strict veterinary supervision. Supportive care (rehydration, nutritional supplementation) may be necessary for severely weakened animals.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
In a wild species like the saiga, prevention relies mainly on habitat management: avoiding overcrowding on grazing areas, preserving free herd migration, and monitoring the body condition of populations. In a conservation or captive setting, regular parasitological monitoring and careful management of enclosures and pastures help limit parasite burden.
Possible complications
Massive infestation can cause anemia, severe dehydration, and general weakness that makes the animal more vulnerable to other infectious diseases and predators. In already fragile wild populations, this can contribute to episodes of significant mortality, particularly in young animals.
