Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by several species of nematodes (roundworms) that parasitize the abomasum (the stomach) and intestine, notably from genera similar to those found in other wild antelopes and ruminants of the steppes. The eggs of these parasites are shed in feces, develop in the external environment, and are then ingested by saigas while grazing.

Young animals, pregnant or nursing females, and already weakened animals (malnutrition, cold exposure, other diseases) are the most vulnerable. Overcrowding on pastures, disrupted migrations, and droughts that concentrate herds around water sources significantly increase the risk of massive infection.

Transmission

Contamination occurs through the oral route, when grazing on grass or drinking water contaminated with larvae from the feces of infested animals. The cycle is favored by moisture and mild temperatures, and by the gathering of herds in restricted grazing areas.
