Causes and risk factors
Parasitism is caused by roundworms (nematodes) that live in the starling's digestive tract, particularly in the gizzard, intestines, or proventriculus. The most frequently encountered species belong to the genera Capillaria, Ascaridia, or Syngamus depending on location. These parasites develop after ingestion of eggs present in contaminated surroundings, or after consumption of an intermediate host such as an earthworm or insect carrying larvae.
Young starlings are more vulnerable due to their still-immature immune system. Close confinement in aviaries or rehabilitation centers, poor sanitation, damp bedding that favors egg survival, and weakened general condition (stress, other illness, malnutrition) all increase the risk and severity of infection.

Transmission occurs mainly by the fecal-oral route: the bird ingests worm eggs present on the ground, in water, or in food contaminated by droppings. Some parasites require passage through an intermediate host, such as an earthworm or insect, which the starling consumes while feeding.
