Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in striped hyenas, whether living in the wild or in captivity in a zoological park.
These worms, invisible to the naked eye as eggs but sometimes visible as adults in droppings, live in the animal's stomach or intestines.
They feed on blood, tissue, or digestive contents, which gradually weakens the hyena.

Causes and risk factors
Several families of roundworms (nematodes) may be responsible, notably ascarids (similar to those in dogs) and hookworms, which attach to the intestinal wall to feed on blood.

Infestation most often occurs through ingestion of eggs present in the environment, water, or parasitized prey, or sometimes through penetration of larvae through the skin with certain hookworms.
Young striped hyenas, whose immune system is not yet fully developed, are most susceptible to severe infestations. Life in captivity within a confined space, where soil may remain contaminated with parasite eggs, increases the risk of reinfection. Stress, malnutrition, or concurrent illness that weakens the animal's natural defenses promotes parasite establishment. Poor enclosure hygiene and the absence of a regular deworming program are major aggravating factors in captive settings.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through the fecal-oral route: the animal ingests worm eggs present in a contaminated environment (soil, water, food).
Certain hookworm larvae can penetrate directly through the skin, particularly through contact with contaminated soil.
Transmission can also occur through consumption of prey or carcasses that themselves carry larvae.
In young animals, transmission from mother to offspring is possible through milk or before birth depending on the parasite type.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian confirms the diagnosis through microscopic examination of feces, called fecal flotation, which detects worm eggs. A complete clinical examination assesses the animal's general condition, hydration status, and weight. Treatment is based on administration of broad-spectrum antiparasitic medications belonging to the anthelmintic family, active against roundworms. Nutritional support and rehydration may be necessary in severe cases. Fecal follow-up after treatment verifies the effectiveness of management.
