Several species of nematodes can colonize the intestines, stomach, or other organs in bears, including genera such as Baylisascaris (bear roundworm), Uncinaria (hookworms), and other gastrointestinal strongyles. These worms live in the animal's digestive tract and feed at its expense, causing irritation, nutrient loss, and sometimes more serious tissue damage depending on the species involved and the parasitic burden.

In cubs and young bears, infestation can cause stunted growth, dull coat, and a bloated abdomen.
