These parasites live in the animal's stomach or intestine and feed at its expense. They are similar to those affecting domestic pigs, as the babirusa belongs to the same family.

In captivity, close confinement, shared ground with other animals, and warm, humid climate all favor the presence of these parasites. Light infestations often go unnoticed, but a heavy parasite load can seriously harm the animal's health, particularly in young individuals.

As the parasite load increases, dull coat, progressive weight loss despite maintained or decreased appetite, soft or frankly diarrheic stools, and sometimes a bloated abdomen may be seen.

In young babirusas, infestation can slow growth and make the animal more tired than usual. In rare cases of heavy infestation, adult worms may be visible directly in the feces.

Several families of roundworms (nematodes) can colonize the babirusa's digestive tract, similarly to what is described in domestic pigs: ascarids (large intestinal worms), stomach worms, or whipworms lodged in the large intestine.

Eggs from these parasites are shed in feces and become infectious after time in the environment (soil, bedding). The animal becomes infected by ingesting these eggs, for example while rooting in soil or consuming contaminated food.

Living in an enclosure with permanent ground (as opposed to replaced, concrete, or regularly cleaned soil) favors the accumulation of parasite eggs in the environment.

Warm, humid climate speeds up egg development to the infectious stage.

Young animals, weakened or stressed individuals, and those living in dense groups are more susceptible to heavy infestations.

An enclosure used successively by several suids without a sanitation break also increases risk.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Periodic fecal examinations (stool analysis) help track the progression of infestation and adjust treatments without overdosing.

Avoiding overcrowding and isolating new arrivals during a parasite screening also limits the introduction of new parasites.

Possible complications

Heavy untreated infestation can lead to severe weight loss, anemia, dehydration from chronic diarrhea, and stunted growth in young animals.

In the most serious cases, especially in already weakened animals, the outcome can be fatal, particularly when multiple parasite types accumulate or when secondary infection develops.

The animal shows persistent diarrhea or abnormal stools for several days.

Weight loss is visible despite maintained appetite.

The coat becomes dull and overall behavior changes (fatigue, withdrawal).

Can the babiroussa transmit these worms to humans?
