Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in binturongs, whether kept in zoos, wildlife rehabilitation centers, or private captivity.
These parasites live in the animal's intestines and feed at its expense, causing progressive decline in overall health. The binturong, a semi-arboreal carnivorous mammal native to Southeast Asia, is particularly susceptible when its environment is humid, poorly maintained, or shared with other parasite-carrying animals.
The disease mainly affects young individuals and weakened animals, but a healthy adult binturong can also harbor worms without showing obvious signs for some time.

The most common signs are loss of appetite, progressive weight loss despite apparently normal feeding, and a dull coat that loses its usual shine.
Digestive disturbances are frequent: soft stools to outright diarrhea, sometimes with worms visible to the naked eye, and abdominal bloating in young animals with heavy infestations.
The animal may appear tired, less active, with a rough coat and slowed growth in young individuals. In severe infestations, occasional vomiting and dehydration may develop.
Some binturongs, particularly well-nourished adults, remain asymptomatic carriers for long periods, making regular screening important.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by intestinal nematodes, roundworms belonging in particular to the families of ascarids and hookworms, which colonize the small intestine or colon of the binturong.
Infestation most often occurs through ingestion of eggs present in environments contaminated with infested feces, or through skin penetration by larvae in certain hookworm species.
Transmission from mother to offspring can also occur, via the placenta or milk, or through close contact with fecal matter in the first weeks of life.
Young binturongs, particularly newborns and recently weaned animals, are most vulnerable due to their still-immature immune system.
A humid environment, poorly cleaned enclosure, high animal density, or contact with other parasitized carnivores significantly increases the risk of infestation.
Stress, unbalanced diet, concurrent illness, or a recently introduced animal without quarantine are also contributing factors.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through the fecal-oral route: the animal ingests parasite eggs present in a soiled enclosure, on food, or by licking itself after walking on contaminated soil.
Certain nematode larvae can also penetrate the skin. Sharing an enclosure with other parasite-carrying carnivores, or using poorly cleaned bedding, promotes spread between individuals.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian makes the diagnosis through a fecal examination (coproscopy), which identifies and quantifies the parasite eggs present.
A complete clinical examination assesses the animal's overall condition, hydration, weight, and coat appearance. In some cases, a blood test may be performed to check for anemia or other effects on the body.
Additional testing such as abdominal ultrasound may be considered if a complication is suspected.
Treatment
Treatment is based on administration of antiparasitic agents from the family of broad-spectrum dewormers, selected and prescribed by the veterinarian based on the type of worm identified.
Nutritional support and rehydration may be necessary in cases of severe infestation with significant weight loss or dehydration.
A fecal examination after treatment confirms the effectiveness of deworming and the absence of reinfection.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
A regular deworming program, tailored to the animal's age and status, is the foundation of prevention and should be established with a veterinarian.
Frequent enclosure cleaning, prompt fecal removal, and substrate disinfection greatly limit the persistence of eggs in the environment.
Quarantine of any new animal with fecal parasite testing before introduction into a group is an essential measure in animal facilities.
Periodic fecal examinations allow detection of infestation before visible symptoms appear.
Possible complications
Untreated heavy infestation can lead to anemia, severe growth retardation in young animals, or even intestinal obstruction in extreme cases of heavily parasitized animals.
General debilitation makes the animal more vulnerable to other infections and can compromise reproduction or survival, particularly in young binturongs.
When to see a veterinarian
The animal shows persistent diarrhea or abnormal stools for several days.
Worms are visible in the stool or around the anus.
Progressive weight loss is observed despite maintained appetite.
The coat becomes dull and the animal appears tired or less active.
A young binturong has a swollen belly or growth retardation.
Repeated vomiting or signs of dehydration appear.
Prognosis
The outlook is generally good when infestation is detected and treated early, with complete recovery of the animal's general condition within a few weeks.
Severe cases, particularly in heavily parasitized young animals or when complications such as intestinal blockage occur, require more intensive management, and the outlook becomes more guarded.
