Progressive weight loss may be seen despite maintained or decreased appetite, dull and raised fur, sometimes intermittent diarrhea, or conversely vomiting.

The belly may appear swollen or tender in heavily infested young animals.

In severe cases, adult worms may be visible in vomit or feces.

Young badgers are most at risk of severe forms with growth delay and dehydration.

A heavily parasitized animal often shows poor general condition that weakens its ability to cope with other diseases or injuries.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by intestinal nematodes (roundworms) that parasitize the badger.

The species most often reported belong to genera similar to those found in other wild and domestic carnivores.

These worms lay eggs that are shed in feces, which then contaminate the soil, burrow, or water.

Other animals become infected by ingesting these eggs, consuming parasitized prey (intermediate hosts), or in young animals, through close contact with the mother in the burrow.

Young age is the main risk factor, with badger cubs being particularly susceptible.

Living in a communal sett promotes the buildup of parasite eggs in the environment and continuous reinfection.

Preexisting weakness, injury, other illness, or significant stress reduces the animal's defenses against parasitism.

High population density and poor sanitary conditions in care facility enclosures also increase risk.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly by the oral route, when ingesting parasite eggs present in soil, food, or water contaminated with infected feces.

Some worms can also be transmitted through prey (insects, earthworms, small vertebrates) that serve as intermediate hosts.

In young animals, passage of larvae through mother's milk or close contact with the mother in the burrow is possible depending on the parasite species involved.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

In some cases, the direct sighting of worms in vomit or feces already strongly directs the veterinarian toward diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment uses internal antiparasitic medications (dewormers) effective against roundworms, prescribed and dosed only by a veterinarian based on the animal's weight and condition.

Nutritional support and rehydration may be necessary in weakened or dehydrated animals.

In care facilities, a protocol of repeated deworming and environmental control often accompanies medical treatment.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

In the wild, prevention relies mainly on maintaining good health in the population and its habitat, which limits heavy infestations.

In care facilities or captivity, good enclosure hygiene, regular cleaning of bedding areas, and prompt removal of droppings greatly reduce contamination risk.

Regular veterinary checkups, including fecal examination, allow detection of infestation before it becomes severe.

There is no vaccine against this parasitic disease.

Possible complications

Heavy untreated infestation can cause severe weight loss, anemia, dehydration, and general weakness, making the animal more vulnerable to infections, injuries, and predation.

In young badgers, heavy parasitism can compromise growth and survival.

In rare cases, intestinal obstruction from a mass of worms is possible with very heavy infestation.

When to see a veterinarian

A rescued badger shows marked weight loss despite eating.

Worms are visible in the animal's feces or vomit.

The animal has persistent diarrhea or repeated vomiting.

The coat becomes dull and rough, and overall condition declines.

A young badger shows a swollen abdomen, dehydration, or obvious growth delay.

Prognosis

The outlook is generally good when infestation is detected early and treated by a veterinarian, particularly in an adult badger in good general health.

It becomes more guarded in heavily infested young animals, those already weakened by another disease, or if treatment is delayed.

Good environmental management after treatment reduces the risk of rapid reinfection.

Frequently asked questions

Can a heavily parasitized badger transmit these worms to my dog?

Direct contact between a wild badger and a dog is rare, but a dog that ingests parasite eggs present in an environment contaminated by badgers could theoretically become infected with certain worms similar to those found in domestic carnivores. Regular deworming and good veterinary monitoring of the dog remain the best protection.

How can you tell if a collected badger has roundworms?

The veterinarian most often performs a microscopic analysis of stool, called coproscopy, which allows parasitic eggs to be detected. Sometimes, adult worms are visible directly in the stool or vomit.

Is intestinal parasitism always serious in badgers?

No. In a healthy adult, light infestation may cause no visible signs. It becomes a concern especially in young individuals, weakened animals, or in cases of heavy parasite burden.

Should all badgers admitted to a wildlife care center be systematically dewormed?
