Tuberculosis is a serious infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Mycobacterium, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis or other related mycobacteria. In the meerkat, this disease has been documented particularly in wild and captive populations, where it can spread insidiously within a social group. Meerkats live in close-knit colonies, which favors transmission between individuals. The disease mainly affects the lungs but can affect other organs.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is due to infection by a mycobacteria of the tuberculosis complex (Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis) or by other non-tuberculous mycobacteria depending on the cases reported. These slow-growing bacteria settle mainly in the lungs and then can spread to the lymph nodes, liver, spleen or skin.

Living in close-knit groups and frequent social contact specific to meerkats increases the risk of spread within a colony. Captivity in confined spaces, an immune system weakened by stress, malnutrition or other illness, as well as contact with other species potentially carrying mycobacteria constitute contributing factors.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly by the respiratory route, by inhalation of contaminated droplets emitted when an infected animal coughs. Close contact between individuals from the same colony, mutual licking, sharing of burrows and food greatly promote propagation. Transmission to humans is possible in the event of close and prolonged contact with an infected animal, particularly in the context of captivity or handling.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian relies on the clinical history, physical examination and palpation of the lymph nodes. Additional examinations such as chest x-ray, analysis of samples (sputum, lymph nodes, biological fluid), immunological or molecular tests (PCR) and sometimes bacterial culture help confirm the diagnosis. An autopsy with histopathological analysis is sometimes necessary to confirm post-mortem cases, particularly in the context of research on this species.

Treatment

Treatment, when considered, is based on prolonged antibiotic therapy with several molecules, under strict veterinary supervision. In practice, in wild or captive animals, euthanasia is often recommended due to the high zoonotic risk, the difficulty of treatment and the risk of spread to the entire colony.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention is based on quarantine and screening of new animals before their introduction into a colony, regular health monitoring of groups in captivity, and maintaining good hygiene and stress management conditions. Controlling contact with mycobacteria reservoir species in the wild or in captivity is also important. There is no reliable vaccine used in this species.

Possible complications

Without treatment, the disease progresses to severe multi-organ damage, extreme weight loss, respiratory failure and death. Spread within the colony can result in the loss of several individuals.

Prognosis

The prognosis is poor, especially in case of late diagnosis. The disease is chronic and progressive, with an often fatal outcome in the absence of treatment, and complex treatment even in the event of early treatment.
