Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms is a very common disease in musk oxen, whether living in the wild or in captivity. It is caused by small worms called nematodes, which live in the stomach (the abomasum) and intestines of the animal. These parasites are present in almost all musk oxen at low levels, causing no visible signs. The problem arises when their numbers become too high, especially in young animals or during difficult conditions. This is then considered a parasitic disease, with a real impact on the growth and general health of the herd.

In young musk oxen (calves), progressive weight loss is most often seen, sometimes despite preserved appetite. The coat becomes dull and may stand on end, giving the animal a neglected appearance. Diarrhea, sometimes intermittent, may develop, soiling the hindquarters. The animal appears tired, less active, and shows delayed growth compared to other young animals in the group. In more severe cases, pallor of the mucous membranes (a sign of anemia) may be noted, and sometimes swelling under the jaw called 'bottle jaw', linked to protein loss in the blood. In adults, signs are often more subtle, except in cases of significant stress (harsh winter, pregnancy, lack of food).

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by several species of gastrointestinal nematodes, including well-known genera in ruminants such as Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, Nematodirus, and Marshallagia. These worms lay eggs that are shed in the animal's feces. The eggs develop into larvae in the external environment, on vegetation, and are then swallowed by the animal while grazing. Once ingested, the larvae develop into adult worms in the stomach or intestines, completing the cycle.
Young animals, whose immune system is still immature, are most exposed to severe infestations. High stocking density of animals on the same pasture promotes accumulation of infective larvae in the environment. Climatic conditions play an important role: a mild and damp spring favors larval development, while intense cold limits it. An animal that is weakened, poorly fed, or stressed (transport, captivity, other disease) is more susceptible to parasites. In captivity or in farmed settings, repeated grazing on the same pasture without rotation significantly increases the risk.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian first relies on clinical signs (weight loss, diarrhea, poor coat condition) and the farming context.
Definitive diagnosis is based on laboratory analysis of fecal samples, which counts parasite eggs and estimates the level of infestation.
A blood test may complement the examination, particularly to assess possible anemia or protein loss.
In some cases, necropsy or examination of the digestive tract of a deceased animal can help identify the specific worm species involved.
Treatment
Treatment relies on antiparasitic medications (dewormers) belonging to different families such as benzimidazoles, avermectins, or levamisoles.
The choice of drug, route of administration, and timing of treatment should be determined by a veterinarian, taking into account the risk of parasite resistance.
Supportive care (improved nutrition, mineral supplementation) may accompany antiparasitic treatment in severe cases.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Pasture management is a cornerstone of prevention: avoiding overstocking of pastures and rotating grazing areas helps reduce parasite burden.
Proper nutrition, tailored to the animal's age and seasonal needs, helps animals better resist parasites.
Regular veterinary monitoring with fecal testing allows tracking of parasite load in the herd and determines the most appropriate time for treatment.
Avoiding overstocking and limiting contact with wet or muddy areas also reduces larval survival in the environment.
Possible complications
Severe untreated infestation can result in lasting growth delay in young animals.
Significant anemia and protein loss may develop, weakening the animal against other diseases.
In the most severe cases, especially during winter stress or food shortage periods, the outcome can be fatal, particularly in young or already weakened animals.

The animal loses weight noticeably despite normal access to food.
Diarrhea persists or is accompanied by an overall decline in condition.
The coat becomes rough and dull, and the animal appears lethargic or less active than usual.
A young musk ox shows clear growth delay compared to other animals of the same age.

Prognosis
Prognosis is generally favorable when infestation is detected early and treated with an appropriate antiparasitic medication.
Most animals recover well after treatment, especially if nutrition and farming conditions are improved at the same time.
Prognosis becomes more guarded in young animals that are severely weakened or in cases of heavy infestation associated with other stress factors.

Can a musk ox carry parasitic worms without being sick?
Yes, it is even the most common situation. A low level of parasites is normal and well tolerated. Disease appears only when the number of worms becomes too high.
Can these worms be transmitted to humans?
No, gastrointestinal nematodes of musk oxen are not transmissible to humans. They are not zoonotic parasites.
Should all musk oxen in a herd be systematically dewormed?
Not necessarily. The veterinarian evaluates the level of infestation through faecal analysis before deciding which animals or groups to treat, in order to limit the development of resistance.
