Causes and risk factors

Infestation is caused by various gastrointestinal nematodes, notably species from the genera Ascaridia, Capillaria, and Heterakis, known to parasitize ground-dwelling birds including ratites.

The bird becomes infected by swallowing parasite eggs present on the ground, in water, or on contaminated vegetation, or sometimes by consuming an intermediate host such as an insect or earthworm carrying larvae.

Young cassowaries are more susceptible because their immune system is still developing. Overcrowded, damp, poorly drained, or infrequently cleaned enclosures promote the buildup of parasite eggs in the soil. Stress from transport, breeding, or a change in environment can weaken the bird's defenses and trigger active disease. The absence of a regular worming program significantly increases the risk.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly through the oral route, by foraging on ground contaminated with worm eggs from the droppings of infested birds.

The cycle may be direct, or indirect via an intermediate host depending on the parasite species involved.

Environmental contamination is favored by crowding of birds, moisture, and soil that is not regularly changed.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

A thorough clinical exam assesses the bird's general condition, hydration, and weight. In some cases, a blood test may be recommended to check for anemia or evaluate overall health status.

Treatment

Treatment involves administering an antiparasitic drug chosen by the veterinarian based on the type of worm identified. Supporting care may be provided for dehydration or marked weakness, such as fluid therapy or nutritional support. Treatment effectiveness is usually monitored with another fecal test a few weeks later.

Prevention

Prevention depends on proper enclosure management: regular cleaning, effective soil drainage, rotating grazing areas when possible, and limiting bird density. A preventive worming program established with your veterinarian based on fecal test results helps reduce parasite load. Quarantining new arrivals and screening them for parasites on arrival are also recommended. Regular monitoring of the birds' body condition helps detect problems early.

Possible complications

Severe untreated infestation can lead to intestinal obstruction, severe anemia, stunted growth in young birds that may be permanent, or death in severe cases. Weakened birds also become more vulnerable to other infections.
