Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common condition in axis deer (Axis axis), a deer species native to Asia that is sometimes kept in zoos or on game farms. These parasites live in the stomach and intestines. They are present in nearly all captive or semi-captive cervids, but become a genuine health problem when numbers become excessive, especially in young animals or those in poor condition. The disease is particularly concerning in game farms because it can slow growth and reproduction in the herd.

Signs depend on the number of parasites present. Light infestation often causes no visible symptoms.

When infestation becomes heavy, appetite is reduced, progressive weight loss is seen, the coat becomes dull and rough, and diarrhea or soft stools may occur.

Young infested axis deer grow slower than their peers and appear stunted.

In severe cases, the animal becomes depressed, the mucous membranes (gums, inner eyelids) become pale due to anemia, and dehydration may develop.

A bloated or mildly tender abdomen is sometimes noted, as is the occasional presence of visible worms in the faeces.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by various roundworms (nematodes) that parasitise the stomach and intestine, notably species similar to those found in other wild cervids and ruminants (such as gastrointestinal strongyles). Eggs are shed in faeces, develop into larvae in the environment, and are then ingested by the animal while grazing on contaminated grass. The cycle completes within a few weeks if conditions (warmth, moisture) are favourable.

Overgrazing and overcrowding in an enclosure promote the buildup of larvae on grass. Young animals, females in late pregnancy or lactation, and animals already weakened by illness, stress, or transport are more susceptible. Warm, humid weather speeds up larval development in the environment, which increases the risk of infection, particularly after the rainy season. Failure to rotate grazing areas and high animal density in the same space also raise the risk.

Transmission

Transmission occurs by oral route: the animal ingests larvae present on grass or in water contaminated by faeces. There is no direct transmission between animals without environmental involvement.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian first considers the herd's history, the animals' body condition, and observed signs. Definitive diagnosis is based on laboratory fecal analysis, which counts parasite eggs and identifies the species involved. A blood test can be useful to assess the degree of anemia or the general health status of the affected animal.

Treatment

Treatment relies on administering antiparasitic drugs (dewormers) from the benzimidazole family, macrocyclic lactones, or other families suited to deer, prescribed and supervised by a veterinarian. Nutritional support and sometimes supplementation may accompany treatment in weakened animals. The choice of product and treatment strategy (individual or whole herd) should be decided with the veterinarian to limit the risk of parasite resistance to treatments.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Pasture management is essential: avoid overgrazing, alternate grazing areas to allow the grass to recover, and prevent overcrowding in enclosures. Regular veterinary monitoring with fecal checks shows when antiparasitic treatment is actually needed, rather than treating routinely. Regular manure collection from enclosures also limits environmental contamination. Good nutrition, matched to the herd's needs, helps animals resist parasites better.

Possible complications

Heavy untreated infestation can lead to severe anemia, permanent stunted growth in young animals, reduced fertility, and in extreme cases, death of the animal, especially if already weakened by other factors. Gastrointestinal worms also weaken the immune system, making the animal more vulnerable to other diseases.

When to see a veterinarian

The animal loses weight while eating normally or less than before. The coat becomes dull and the animal appears lethargic. Diarrhea or loose stools persist for several days. A young chital grows more slowly than others of the same age. The gums or inside of the eyelids appear pale. Several animals in the herd show similar signs at the same time.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally good if the disease is detected early and treated properly, with good recovery of body condition.

It becomes more guarded in heavily infested young animals, pregnant females, or animals already weakened by other problems, where growth or fertility issues may persist.
