Pasteurellosis is a bacterial infectious disease caused mainly by bacteria of the Pasteurella or Mannheimia genus. In Grant's gazelle, as in other African antelopes, this infection can cause severe respiratory damage and sometimes severe septicemia. This species, often kept in zoos or reserves, is particularly sensitive in times of stress.

Clinical signs often appear suddenly. Fever, marked depression and loss of appetite are observed. Breathing difficulties with rapid breathing and sometimes coughing may occur, accompanied by a runny nose. Swelling of the throat or submandibular region is sometimes visible. In the most serious forms, the animal can be found lying down, unable to get up, with a very rapid progression towards death within a few hours to a few days.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by bacteria of the genus Pasteurella (notably Pasteurella multocida) or Mannheimia haemolytica. These bacteria can occur naturally in the respiratory tract of many animals without causing disease, but become pathogenic when the animal's immunity is weakened.
Stress is the main triggering factor: transport, handling, capture, change of enclosure, difficult climatic conditions (excessive heat, humidity). Overpopulation, unsuitable diet, concomitant parasitic infections or any other disease weakening the immune system increase the risk. Young animals and individuals newly introduced into a group are more vulnerable.
Transmission
Transmission occurs by direct contact between animals, by air (respiratory droplets), or by contamination of the shared environment (water points, litter). Stress linked to transport, capture, sudden climate changes or overpopulation favors the appearance of the disease in animals already carrying the bacteria.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on the clinical signs observed and the recent history of the animal (stress, transport). The definitive diagnosis requires a bacteriological analysis from respiratory or blood samples, carried out in the laboratory. An autopsy may be necessary in cases of sudden death to confirm the cause.
Treatment
Treatment is based on appropriate antibiotic therapy, prescribed and administered under veterinary supervision. Supportive treatments such as fluid therapy and anti-inflammatories may be combined depending on the animal's condition. The speed of implementation of treatment is decisive for the prognosis.

Prevention
Prevention is based above all on reducing stress: gentle handling, well-organized transport, quarantine of new arrivals, appropriate population density. Good hygiene of enclosures and water points limits the environmental bacterial load. A balanced diet and regular parasite monitoring strengthen the animal's natural defenses.
Possible complications
Without prompt treatment, the infection can progress to widespread sepsis, severe pneumonia or death. Peracute forms can lead to death within a few hours without significant warning signs.

The prognosis is poor in the absence of early treatment, as the disease can progress very quickly. With rapid veterinary care, some animals can recover, but peracute forms often remain fatal despite treatment.
