Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common condition in Kirk's dik-dik, a small African antelope often kept in zoos or private reserves.

These parasites live in the animal's stomach and intestines. They feed on blood or nutrients and can, in large numbers, cause serious digestive disease.

Because of its small size and ground-dwelling lifestyle, the dik-dik is particularly at risk, as it readily ingests larvae present in grass or bedding.

Transmission occurs through indirect fecal-oral route: the animal ingests infective larvae present on grass, soil, or bedding contaminated by feces from carrier animals.

Direct transmission from one animal to another without environmental passage is not usually observed for this type of parasite.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The coat becomes dull and the animal appears listless or less active.
