Signs observed are often linked to the anemia caused by destruction of red blood cells. The animal may seem tired, depressed, less active than usual, and refuse to eat normally. The mucous membranes, visible in the gums or around the eyes, may appear pale instead of pink. Fever is common in the acute phase. In more severe cases, urine may become darker in color due to the breakdown of red blood cells. Progressive weight loss may develop if the disease becomes chronic.

Causes and risk factors
Piroplasmosis is caused by microscopic blood parasites called piroplasms, mainly Babesia and sometimes Theileria. These parasites invade red blood cells and gradually destroy them. They are transmitted through the bite of infected ticks, which act as vectors—that is, as intermediaries for transmission between animals. Kirk's dik-dik, a tiny dwarf antelope native to East Africa, can be exposed to these ticks both in the wild and in captivity in zoos or reserves if tick control measures are insufficient.
Animals living in tick-infested areas, poorly maintained habitat, lack of preventive antiparasitic treatment, an immune system weakened by young age, pregnancy, or another disease, as well as significant stress from transport or environmental change all increase the risk of developing the disease or worsening its signs.
Transmission
Transmission occurs exclusively through the bite of infected ticks, which serve as biological vectors. The parasite multiplies inside the tick before being injected into the animal during the tick's blood meal. There is no direct transmission from one animal to another without passage through a tick.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
A veterinarian specialising in exotic or wild animals suspects piroplasmosis based on clinical signs, the presence of ticks on the animal, and the context (infested area, captivity in a zoo or wildlife reserve). Definitive diagnosis relies on a blood test: a blood sample allows observation of parasites directly inside red blood cells under a microscope after staining a blood smear. More advanced tests, such as molecular biology analysis (PCR) or serological tests, can confirm infection and identify the exact parasite species involved. A complete blood test also provides information on the degree of anaemia and the animal's overall condition, which helps assess severity and guide treatment.
Treatment
Management relies on specific antiparasitic medications capable of eliminating piroplasms from the blood, prescribed and administered only under veterinary supervision due to this species' particular sensitivity to treatment. Supporting the animal's general condition is often necessary in parallel: fluids to combat dehydration, and in cases of severe anaemia, blood transfusion may be considered by a specialist team. External antiparasitic treatment is also implemented to eliminate remaining ticks and prevent reinfestation.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies primarily on tick control: external antiparasitic treatments suited to small wild ruminants, regular maintenance of enclosures and pastures to limit areas favourable to ticks, and frequent visual inspections of the animal's coat. In captivity, strict environmental control and quarantine of new animals before introduction to a group help reduce the risk of introducing infected ticks. There is no vaccine available for this species.
Possible complications
Severe anaemia can lead to failure of multiple organs due to lack of tissue oxygenation, particularly affecting the kidneys and heart. In an animal as small and stress-sensitive as the dik-dik, general weakness also promotes secondary infections and can rapidly worsen overall condition. Without treatment, the outcome can be fatal, especially in young animals, weakened individuals, or those already affected by another disease.

The animal appears unusually tired or sluggish and lacks its normal energy.
The gums or mucous membranes appear pale.
Fever is present or suspected.
The animal refuses to eat or is losing weight rapidly.
Ticks are visible on the coat, particularly in large numbers.

Prognosis
The prognosis depends mainly on how quickly treatment is started. When detected and treated early, a Kirk's dik-dik can recover from piroplasmosis. However, if anemia is already severe, or if the dik-dik is young, weakened, or stressed, the prognosis becomes more guarded, as this species is known for its high sensitivity to stress and disease.

Can the dik-dik transmit piroplasmosis to humans or other animals directly?
No, the disease is not transmitted through direct contact. It necessarily requires passage through an infected tick that bites several animals in succession.
Can a healed dik-dik fall ill again?
