Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common parasitic disease in greater flamingos, whether living in the wild or in zoos and wildlife rescue centres. These worms live in the bird's digestive tract and feed at its expense. Light infestations often go unnoticed, but a heavy parasite burden can seriously weaken the bird, especially young flamingos that have recently been weaned or are stressed by transport or a change of environment.

Signs are often subtle at first. Progressive weight loss may be seen despite preserved or reduced appetite, dull feathering, decreased activity, and sometimes intermittent diarrhea. In young flamingos, stunted growth and a distended or tender abdomen are possible. In heavy infestations, worms may be visible in the droppings. In severe cases, dehydration, anemia, and general weakness can develop, especially if multiple parasite species or another disease is present at the same time.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by nematodes (roundworms) that establish themselves in the flamingo's stomach, small intestine, or large intestine. Several genera of avian nematodes may be responsible, most often transmitted by ingestion of eggs or larvae present in water, silt, contaminated soil, or through an intermediate host (small aquatic invertebrates) that the flamingo consumes while filter-feeding on water and silt.
Young flamingos, weak birds, recently captured, transported or stressed individuals are more susceptible. High bird density on the same body of water, poorly maintained pond or enclosure, stagnant water and mud rich in intermediate hosts promote parasite accumulation. Captive conditions with soil or shared pond areas left uncleaned for long periods also increase the risk of reinfection.
Transmission
Contamination occurs by ingestion of worm eggs present in the environment (water, mud, sediments) or by consumption of infested intermediate prey (small crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic insect larvae) that the flamingo filters while feeding.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on the bird's history (origin, captivity, contacts), general clinical examination and especially faecal analysis (coproscopic examination) to detect and identify parasite eggs. In some cases, blood testing to assess general condition (anaemia, protein levels) or endoscopy may provide additional information in fragile birds.
Treatment
Treatment is based on administration of antiparasitic drugs specific to roundworms, prescribed and tailored by the veterinarian according to the identified parasite species. Nutritional support and rehydration may be necessary in weakened birds. Treatment of the entire group and environmental sanitation often accompany individual management.

Prevention
Regular maintenance of ponds and wetland areas, water renewal and cleaning of soil surfaces reduce the presence of infective larvae. Periodic veterinary checks of droppings (faecal examination) allow detection of infestation before symptoms appear. Managing bird density and quarantining new arrivals before integration into the group limits spread. Preventive antiparasitic treatments can be recommended by the veterinarian depending on the park or reserve setting.
Possible complications
Untreated heavy infestation can cause severe weight loss, anaemia, dehydration and general weakness making the bird more vulnerable to other infections. In young birds, lasting growth retardation is possible. In severe or neglected cases, the outcome may be fatal, particularly in chicks or already weakened birds.
