These parasites live in the animal's intestines and sometimes in the stomach. They feed at the expense of their host and, in cases of heavy infestation, can cause significant digestive disease.
Jaguars are exposed from a very early age, notably through their mother's milk or through contact with a contaminated environment. Young animals are generally the most susceptible.

Several types of roundworms (nematodes) can affect jaguars, notably ascarids (worms similar to those found in other felids) and hookworms, which attach to the intestinal wall and can cause blood loss.
