Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common infestation in domestic sparrows and many small songbirds. These worms live in the bird's intestine and feed partly at the bird's expense. Light infections often go unnoticed, but a heavy parasitic load can seriously weaken the bird, especially if young, stressed, or already ill. This condition affects both wild sparrows and those rescued or kept in captivity (aviaries, wildlife rehabilitation centers).

Signs are often subtle at first. Progressive weight loss may be seen despite normal appetite, or conversely, loss of appetite. Feathering becomes dull and unkempt, and the bird appears listless, less active, and tires easily. Digestive problems are possible: abnormally soft stools or stools of altered appearance, sometimes a visibly swollen belly (bloating). In young sparrows, infestation can slow growth and overall development. In severe cases, worms may occasionally be visible in the droppings.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by intestinal nematodes (roundworms), particularly ascarids and capillaries, which are common parasites in wild grain-eating birds such as sparrows. The eggs of these worms are shed in the feces of infested birds. They contaminate the environment: soil, feeders, and water sources. Other sparrows become infested by pecking at food or drinking water contaminated by these eggs. Some parasites may also be transmitted via an intermediate host (such as an insect) that the sparrow ingests while feeding.

Young birds, still immature in terms of immune function, are more vulnerable. Close confinement, as in aviaries or around heavily used feeders, promotes transmission because contaminated droppings accumulate in a confined space. A dirty, damp environment with feeders or water troughs that are rarely or never cleaned increases the risk. A bird already weakened by another illness, lack of food, or stress is more susceptible to severe infestation.

For wildlife rehabilitation centers, isolating new arrivals and having their droppings checked by a veterinarian before mixing them with other birds is good practice.

Severe untreated infestation can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, and weaken the bird against other infections.
