Signs vary depending on the intensity of the infestation. A lightly parasitized panda may show no visible symptoms. With a heavy parasite burden, loss of appetite, gradual weight loss, dull coat, and sometimes diarrhoea or vomiting are observed. The abdomen may appear distended or tender to touch. In young individuals, heavy infestation can cause stunted growth, marked lethargy, or even serious complications such as intestinal blockage if worms accumulate in large numbers. In some severe cases, adult worms may be visible directly in the faeces or, more rarely, vomited up.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by intestinal nematodes, primarily Baylisascaris schroederi, a roundworm specific to giant pandas that infests the small intestine. The larvae first migrate through the body (liver, lungs) before reaching the intestine where they mature into adults and produce eggs, which are then shed in the faeces.
Young pandas are most vulnerable, particularly during and after weaning. A contaminated environment, poor enclosure or habitat hygiene, and degraded natural habitats increase the risk of infestation. Stress, unbalanced diet, and weakened immunity also promote higher parasite burdens. In the wild, habitat degradation and population concentration in restricted areas increase exposure to infective eggs.
Transmission
Infection occurs through ingestion of worm eggs present in the environment, particularly in soil, water, or on bamboo contaminated by infected faeces. Eggs can survive for long periods in the external environment, making environmental contamination particularly persistent. There is no direct transmission from one panda to another without passage through the environment.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian diagnoses the condition through microscopic examination of feces to look for worm eggs (fecal flotation). Treatment

Prevention relies on strict sanitation of enclosures and living areas, with regular cleaning and proper disposal of feces. Preventive deworming programs on a regular schedule are implemented in conservation centers and zoos, particularly for young animals. Parasitological surveillance through fecal examination allows early detection of infestation before signs appear. In the wild, habitat preservation and limiting overcrowding help reduce parasite pressure.

The most serious complications occur during heavy infestations, particularly in young pandas: intestinal blockage from worm accumulation, intestinal perforation, peritonitis, or aberrant larval migration to other organs such as the liver or lungs. These complications can be fatal if not managed quickly.
