This condition is considered serious in the giant panda, particularly in very young individuals (cubs) whose immune system is still immature, and in older animals. It requires rapid and specialized veterinary care, usually as part of conservation programs in zoos or breeding centers.

An affected panda typically shows cough, sometimes accompanied by nasal discharge. Breathing may become faster or more difficult, occasionally noisy. The animal is often lethargic, less active than usual, and may refuse to eat.

Fever is common. In more severe cases, the animal may appear short of breath even at rest, with mucous membranes losing their usual pink color if oxygen levels are significantly low. In very young cubs, signs may be subtle at first: simple fatigue, lack of interest in nursing, before sometimes rapid worsening.

Causes and risk factors

Giant panda pneumonia most often results from infection of the deep respiratory tract. Several agents can be responsible: bacteria (such as certain strains causing opportunistic infections), respiratory viruses, or more rarely lung parasites.

Infection can occur primarily, or develop secondarily to another health problem that weakens the animal's defenses (stress, chronic illness, digestive parasitism, malnutrition). Young pandas and elderly or weakened individuals are particularly at risk.

Inadequate housing conditions (excessive humidity, cold drafts, poor ventilation) can promote the disease by compromising respiratory tract health.

Giant panda cubs with still-developing immunity and older individuals are most susceptible to this disease. General weakness caused by another illness, parasitic infection, or poor nutrition also increases risk.

Unfavorable environmental conditions—high humidity, cold, inadequate ventilation, and stress from transport or habitat change—are significant contributing factors, as is close contact with other sick animals.

Transmission

Transmission depends on the causative agent: certain respiratory infectious agents can spread by airborne route between animals (droplets, close contact), particularly with shared living quarters. The risk of transmission between captive pandas often justifies temporary isolation of the sick animal.

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Treatment

Supportive care is essential: oxygen therapy if respiratory distress occurs, fluid therapy to maintain hydration, and anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce lung inflammation.

Close monitoring in a specialized facility is necessary, with treatment adjusted according to clinical progress and results of additional tests.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention depends primarily on high-quality housing conditions: well-ventilated enclosures, protected from excessive humidity and cold drafts, with appropriate temperature control. Regular cleaning reduces the load of infectious agents in the environment.

Regular veterinary check-ups enable early detection of any signs of weakness or underlying disease that might predispose to pneumonia. Balanced, species-appropriate nutrition also supports immune defenses.

Stress management, particularly during transport or environmental changes, helps reduce the risk of respiratory infection.

Vaccination

There is no universal vaccine covering all possible causes of pneumonia in giant pandas. Prevention therefore relies mainly on hygiene and disease management measures.
