These worms live in the animal's stomach or intestines and feed at the animal's expense. In pangolins, this parasitic infection is considered a major factor in compromising health, particularly during stress caused by capture, transport, or captivity.

Signs are often subtle at first, making detection difficult in an animal that is naturally secretive and nocturnal. Progressive weight loss may occur despite maintained or decreased appetite, a dull-looking coat or scales, and unusual lethargy. Digestive problems such as diarrhea, soft stools, or abdominal bloating may develop. In severe infestations, worms may be visible in the stool or during vomiting. In young pangolins, stunted growth is possible. A heavily parasitized animal becomes more vulnerable to other diseases and stress.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by gastrointestinal nematodes—roundworms that colonize the pangolin's digestive tract. Several genera have been reported in different pangolin species, particularly in Asia and Africa. Infection most often occurs through ingestion of eggs or larvae present in the environment, in food (ants, termites), or through contact with contaminated feces.

Capture and captivity stress is a major aggravating factor, as it weakens the animal's natural defenses and promotes the multiplication of parasites already present.

Crowded conditions in rescue or confiscation centers, with multiple animals in confined spaces, increase the risk of cross-contamination.

A soiled or poorly maintained environment promotes the parasite lifecycle.

Young animals, weakened individuals, and those recently seized from trafficking are at particular risk.

Transmission

Transmission occurs by oral route, through ingestion of eggs or larvae present in the environment, on prey (ants, termites), or through contact with contaminated feces. It does not involve direct transmission between pangolins through simple contact, except when there is heavy environmental contamination.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian relies on the animal's history, particularly its wild or trafficking origin, and a complete clinical examination.

Diagnosis is confirmed by microscopic analysis of feces, looking for roundworm eggs or larvae. This examination may need to be repeated as egg shedding can be irregular.

Treatment

Treatment is based on administering antiparasitic drugs from the anthelmintic family, selected by the veterinarian depending on the type of parasite identified.

Nutritional support and rehydration may be necessary if the animal is severely weakened.

Treatment must always be prescribed and monitored by a veterinarian experienced with exotic species, as the pangolin is a fragile species sensitive to certain medications.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention mainly relies on good hygiene in the captive environment, with regular cleaning of enclosures and bedding to limit the accumulation of parasite eggs.

Systematic parasite screening by fecal examination is recommended when any new pangolin arrives at a center, before any contact with other animals.

Reducing stress through minimal handling and a calm environment also helps limit the effects of parasitism.

There is no vaccine against this parasitic infection.

Possible complications

Heavy untreated infestation can lead to severe malnutrition, dehydration, and general weakness that makes the animal more susceptible to other infections.

In an animal already stressed by captivity or trafficking, parasitism can contribute directly to death, particularly in young animals or those already weakened.

A recently captured, seized, or transferred pangolin should be examined by a veterinarian before any contact with other animals.

Visible weight loss or refusal to eat.

Persistent diarrhea or abnormal feces.

Presence of visible worms in the stool or vomit.

Marked lethargy or the animal remaining unusually still.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally favorable if parasitism is detected and treated early, in an animal otherwise in good general health.

It becomes more guarded in animals already severely weakened by trafficking stress, dehydration, or other associated diseases—a situation that is unfortunately common in confiscated pangolins.

Can pangolin parasitism be transmitted to humans?

Gastrointestinal nematodes specific to pangolins are not considered transmissible to humans under normal conditions. Therefore, this is not a recognized zoonotic disease.

Why are wild pangolins often carriers of these worms?

Like many wild animals, pangolins naturally harbour a certain parasite burden. The problem arises mainly when stress, captivity, or an associated disease tips this balance towards a clinically severe infestation.
