Gastrointestinal parasitism in pumas caused by roundworms (nematodes) encompasses several intestinal infestations caused by parasites such as ascarids (Toxascaris, Toxocara) or hookworms (Ancylostoma). These worms live in the animal's intestine and feed at its expense. Pumas, whether wild or kept in captivity (zoo, wildlife centre), can be affected at any age, but young animals are generally the most vulnerable. This parasitosis is common in large felids and remains manageable in most cases if detected early.

Causes and risk factors

Parasitism is caused by intestinal nematodes, particularly ascarids (common roundworms) and sometimes hookworms. These adult worms live attached to the intestinal wall or free within the intestinal lumen, where they lay eggs that are shed in the faeces.

Young age is the main risk factor, as puma kittens are highly susceptible. Living in captivity in a poorly cleaned environment, close contact with other carnivores, a weakened immune system, significant stress, or feeding on uncontrolled prey also increase the risk of infestation.

Transmission

Contamination occurs mainly through ingestion of eggs present in contaminated environment (soil, water, prey), through consumption of prey that are themselves parasitised, or in young animals through transplacental passage or via milk from an infested mother. Some hookworms can also penetrate directly through the skin.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian makes the diagnosis through microscopic examination of fecal samples (fecal flotation) to detect and identify parasite eggs. A thorough clinical examination and sometimes blood work to assess the animal's overall condition complete the evaluation.

Treatment

Treatment uses antiparasitic medications (dewormers) effective against roundworms, given under veterinary supervision. Supportive care (fluid therapy, nutritional supplementation) may be necessary in cases of severe infestation with significant weight loss.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention relies on strict enclosure hygiene (regular cleaning and removal of feces), health screening of prey used for feeding, and establishment of regular preventive deworming programs administered by a veterinarian, especially in young animals and when a new individual arrives at a facility.

Possible complications

Untreated heavy infestation can lead to intestinal blockage in young animals, severe anemia (especially with hookworms, which feed on blood), stunted growth, and general weakness that increases susceptibility to other diseases.

Worms are visible in feces or vomit.

The belly appears bloated, especially in a young puma.

Weight loss or stunted growth is observed despite normal appetite.

Transmission to humans

Some of these roundworms, particularly ascaris and hookworm larvae, can occasionally infect humans through contact with contaminated environments, causing conditions such as cutaneous or visceral larva migrans. Following basic hygiene rules (hand washing, avoiding direct contact with feces) limits this risk, particularly for staff working in direct contact with these animals.

Prognosis

The outlook is generally good when infestation is detected and treated early. It becomes more guarded in very young animals with heavy infections, due to the risk of complications such as anaemia or intestinal blockage.
