Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a rare but possible digestive condition in the yellow fat-tailed scorpion (Androctonus australis). These internal parasites live in the animal's digestive tract and feed partly on its nutritional reserves. In invertebrates such as scorpions, these infestations remain poorly documented but can progressively weaken the animal, especially in captivity where stress and overcrowding favour their development.

Signs are often subtle and non-specific in scorpions, making them difficult to recognise for an inexperienced owner. Progressive weight loss may be seen despite apparently normal feeding, a general decrease in activity, refusal of offered prey, and sometimes faeces or droppings with an abnormal appearance (softer or irregular). The abdomen (opisthosoma) may appear distended or conversely shrunken depending on the stage. The animal becomes generally more lethargic, less responsive to stimuli and spends less time on the surface.

Causes and risk factors
Infestation is caused by nematodes (roundworms) that colonise the scorpion's digestive tract. Contamination most often occurs through ingestion of prey (insects, other invertebrates) themselves carrying parasite larvae or eggs, or through contact with a substrate fouled by contaminated droppings.
Captive-bred scorpions are at increased risk when the prey offered (crickets, roaches) comes from unsanitized breeding facilities. Poor substrate maintenance, inadequate terrarium hygiene, overcrowding, or introducing a new scorpion without quarantine increase the risk of transmission.

Transmission occurs mainly by the oral route, through ingestion of contaminated prey or substrate fouled by nematode eggs or larvae.
