This condition affects both farmed catfish in ponds and wild fish, particularly in still waters rich in organic matter. It is common but often goes unnoticed, especially when worm numbers are low.

Most lightly infected catfish show no visible signs. As infestation increases, gradual weight loss may occur despite maintained or reduced appetite.
