Gastrointestinal roundworm (nematode) parasitism is a common digestive condition in the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus), particularly in young animals and weakened individuals. Several species of intestinal nematodes can colonize the digestive tract of the wombat, causing impaired nutrient absorption and poor general condition. This disease is mainly encountered in wild wombats in poor body condition, in animals taken into care centers, or in those already weakened by other pathologies such as mange.

The most common signs are diarrhea or loose stools, gradual weight loss despite sometimes maintaining an appetite, dull coat and a general unkempt appearance.

In young wombats, stunted growth and a bloated or distended belly are often observed.

The animal may become despondent, less active, and dehydrated if there is severe diarrhea.

In some cases, worms or worm fragments may be visible in the stool.

A mild infestation may not cause any visible signs, especially in a healthy adult.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by the presence of gastrointestinal nematodes in the stomach or intestine of the wombat. These roundworms feed on digestive tissues or nutrients ingested by the host, leading to local inflammation and malabsorption. Infestation generally occurs through ingestion of eggs or larvae present in the environment (soil, grass, burrows) contaminated by the feces of carrier animals.

Young wombats, particularly those recently weaned or orphans taken into care centers, are more vulnerable. An overcrowded or unsanitary environment (shared burrows, rehabilitation enclosures) promotes contamination. Animals already weakened by sarcoptic mange, malnutrition or other chronic illness are more susceptible to severe infestation. Stress linked to captivity or a recent rescue can also reduce the animal's natural defenses.

Transmission

Transmission occurs by the fecal-oral route: the wombat ingests eggs or larvae of nematodes present in the contaminated environment, particularly in burrows, grazing areas or water points shared between several animals.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian makes the diagnosis by examining the stool under a microscope (coproscopy) to detect nematode eggs. A general assessment of the animal, including its body condition and a search for other associated diseases (such as mange), completes the evaluation. In some cases, further examination may be necessary to identify the species of parasite involved.

Treatment

Treatment is based on the administration of antiparasitic drugs adapted to the wild species, prescribed and dosed exclusively by a veterinarian competent in wildlife. Nutritional support and rehydration may be necessary in the event of significant diarrhea or marked weight loss. Treatment of any associated illnesses, such as mange, is also essential for the animal's recovery.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention is based on good hygiene in enclosures and care areas to limit the accumulation of parasite eggs in the environment. Regular veterinary check-ups with stool examination are recommended for wombats in rehabilitation centers. Avoiding overcrowding and frequently cleaning areas where animals stay reduces the risk of contamination. Managing sick or weakened animals in isolation limits the spread between individuals.

Possible complications

A severe, untreated infestation can lead to severe dehydration, extreme weight loss and immunosuppression making the animal vulnerable to further infections. In young people, significant growth delay can compromise their development. In the most serious cases, the animal can die from complications related to malnutrition and dehydration.

The animal has persistent diarrhea or abnormal stools.

Visible weight loss is noted despite a normal appetite.

The coat becomes dull and the animal appears despondent or less active.

Worms are visible in the stool.

A young wombat shows stunted growth or a distended belly.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally good if the infestation is detected early and treated by a wildlife veterinarian. Severe cases, especially in young people or animals already weakened by other pathologies, may have a more guarded prognosis without rapid treatment.
