Intestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common problem in glass frogs kept in captivity, especially in Hyalinobatrachium fleischmanni. These small arboreal frogs from Central and South America, valued for their transparent skin through which their internal organs can be seen, often carry intestinal nematodes acquired in the wild or transmitted in terrariums. The parasitism typically remains mild when the parasite load is low, but can become serious in a weakened or stressed animal.

Signs are often subtle and easily missed in such a tiny animal. Progressive weight loss may be observed, visible especially in the belly which becomes thin or conversely becomes abnormally bloated. Appetite decreases, the frog becomes less active, feeds less frequently or refuses live prey. Soft droppings or abnormal stool consistency may be noted, along with stunted growth in young individuals. Due to the transparency of the ventral skin characteristic of Centrolenidae, it is sometimes possible to see masses or an abnormally enlarged digestive tract, but this observation should be confirmed by a veterinary examination.

Causes and risk factors

Several genera of intestinal nematodes (roundworms) can parasitize the digestive tract of glass frogs, including pinworms and other nematodes specific to amphibians. These parasites lay eggs that are shed in the droppings and contaminate the terrarium substrate. The animal reinfects itself or infects its companions by ingesting eggs present on the soil, plants or prey (insects) that have been in contact with infested fecal matter.

Recently imported animals from the wild carry the highest risk, as they often arrive already parasitized. A poorly cleaned terrarium, overcrowding, moist substrate favorable to egg survival, stress from transport or incompatible housing, and a weakened immune system from poor husbandry conditions (temperature, humidity, diet) all increase the risk of clinically significant parasitism.

Transmission

Transmission occurs via the fecal-oral route: ingestion of nematode eggs present in the substrate, on decorations, or carried by contaminated prey that have been in contact with infested droppings.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Diagnosis relies on faecal examination (coproscopy) performed by a veterinarian to identify nematode eggs under the microscope. A full clinical examination of the animal, including magnified observation when needed thanks to the transparency of its skin, completes the assessment. In some cases, ultrasound or imaging adapted to very small animals may be considered by an experienced practitioner.

Treatment

Treatment is based on antiparasitic drugs specific to nematodes, prescribed and adjusted by a veterinarian competent in amphibians, since the therapeutic window in these highly sensitive animals is narrow. Nutritional support and improved husbandry conditions (humidity, temperature, hygiene) systematically accompany drug therapy.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Systematic quarantine of any new animal before introduction into an established terrarium is essential, with a faecal examination. Regular terrarium cleaning, prompt removal of droppings, substrate and décor disinfection limit contamination. Routine faecal analysis by a veterinarian specializing in exotic pets or herpetology is recommended, especially for wild-caught animals.

Possible complications

Untreated heavy infestation can lead to intestinal obstruction, severe malabsorption, extreme weight loss, and ultimately death, particularly in young animals or those already weakened.

The animal is visibly losing weight despite maintained appetite

The belly appears abnormally swollen or conversely sunken

The frog refuses food for several days in succession

The droppings appear abnormal or suspicious elements are visible in them

The animal is lethargic, remains hidden constantly, or no longer moves

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally favorable if the parasitism is caught early and treated appropriately by a veterinarian experienced with amphibians. However, advanced infestation in an animal already weakened by illness significantly worsens the prognosis due to the small size and physiological fragility of the species.
