What is it?

Intestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in the goliath frog (Conraua goliath), the world's largest frog, whether kept in captivity or observed in the wild.

These worms live in the animal's digestive tract and feed partly on its food, and sometimes on its intestinal tissues.

When present in small numbers, these parasites are often well tolerated. But in large numbers, or in a weakened animal, they can cause serious digestive disease.

Signs are often subtle at first, making the disease difficult to detect.

Progressive weight loss despite maintained appetite may occur, or conversely, clear loss of appetite.

Abnormal stools are common: soft, sometimes with worms visible to the naked eye.

The animal may seem tired, less active, and its belly may appear swollen or distended.

In young frogs, stunted growth is possible.

In severe cases, vomiting or dehydration may develop.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by nematodes (roundworms) that establish themselves in the intestine of the goliath frog.

Several genera of nematodes can affect amphibians, some being fairly specific to African frogs of this family.

These worms have a life cycle that can be direct (the parasite's egg becomes directly infective) or involve an intermediate host, such as an insect or small invertebrate consumed by the frog.

Several factors increase the risk of significant intestinal parasitism:

- high animal density in the same space (overcrowding in a terrarium or pond);

- poor hygiene, with accumulation of droppings;

- poor water or substrate quality;

- feeding on uncontrolled live prey (wild insects);

- stress from transport, recent acclimation, or unsuitable captive conditions;

- a weakened immune system, for example in a young, elderly, or already sick animal.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly through ingestion of worm eggs or larvae present in the water, soil, or in prey consumed by the frog.

A poorly cleaned terrarium, stagnant water not changed regularly, or live prey already parasitized, are frequent sources of contamination.

The cycle can close rapidly in captivity if feces are not removed regularly, parasite eggs being shed in the stools and then reingested.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Diagnosis relies mainly on microscopic examination of stool samples (fecal examination), which allows detection of worm eggs or sometimes adult parasites.

The veterinarian can also perform a complete clinical examination of the animal, assessing its general condition, weight, and the appearance of its belly.

Treatment

Treatment relies on the use of antiparasitic medications suitable for amphibians, prescribed and dosed only by a veterinarian specialized in exotic animals.

Amphibians are particularly sensitive to certain drugs, and improper use can be toxic or even fatal.

In addition to medication, thorough cleaning of the animal's living environment is essential to prevent immediate reinfection.

Nutritional support may be offered if the animal is weakened or underweight.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention relies mainly on hygiene and management of the animal's living environment.

It is recommended to clean the terrarium or pond regularly, remove droppings as soon as possible, and change the water frequently.

It is preferable to feed the frog with farmed prey rather than wild prey, whose parasitic status is unknown.

Regular veterinary checks, including stool analysis, allow detection of parasitism before severe symptoms appear.

Quarantine of new animals introduced into a collection or group is also an important measure.

Possible complications

Without treatment, significant intestinal parasitism can lead to severe weight loss, dehydration, and general weakening of the animal.

This can make the frog more vulnerable to other infections, particularly bacterial or fungal.

In the most severe cases, intestinal obstruction from a large number of worms, or perforation of the digestive tract wall, are possible though rare.

When to see a veterinarian

The animal shows visible weight loss despite normal or increased appetite.

Worms are visible in the droppings.

The frog refuses to eat for several days.

The belly appears abnormally swollen or hard.

The animal appears lethargic and less responsive than usual.

Vomiting is observed.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally good when parasitism is detected early and treated appropriately.

Most Goliath frogs recover well following antiparasitic treatment combined with improved living conditions.

The prognosis becomes more guarded if the animal is severely emaciated, dehydrated, or if treatment is delayed.

Frequently asked questions

Are the intestinal parasitic worms of the Goliath frog dangerous to humans?

The risk of transmission to humans is considered very low to nonexistent for the majority of nematodes specific to amphibians. It is nonetheless recommended to wash your hands after handling the animal or its environment, as a general hygiene measure.

How do I know if my Goliath frog has worms?

Only a fecal examination performed by a veterinarian can confirm the presence of parasites. Visible signs such as weight loss or abnormal stools should raise concern, but are not sufficient to make a definitive diagnosis.

Can you give a cat or dog antiparasitic to a frog?

No, that is strongly discouraged. Amphibians have very particular sensitivity to many molecules through their permeable skin. Only a veterinarian competent in exotic animals can select an appropriate product and administration method.

Should all animals in the same terrarium be treated at the same time?
