Stress from transport, habitat changes, or unsuitable temperatures weakens immune defences. Introduction of new animals without quarantine is a common cause of outbreaks in amphibian collections.
Transmission
The virus spreads through direct contact between animals, contaminated water, or contact with soiled surfaces, equipment, or substrates. Ingestion of infected tissue (cannibalism, consumption of carcasses) is a common transmission route. Stress, overcrowding in ponds or terrariums, and skin injuries promote spread. The virus can survive for a time in the environment, particularly in water and moist sediments.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Confirmed diagnosis requires specialized laboratory analysis, performed on tissue samples or swabs, usually from sick animals or following necropsy. The exotic animal veterinarian relies on clinical signs, history (mass mortality in a collection), and techniques to detect viral genetic material. Treatment
No specific and effective antiviral treatment exists for ranavirus. Management is mainly supportive: maintenance of appropriate water temperature, stress reduction, strict isolation of affected animals. Antibiotic treatment may be considered by the veterinarian if secondary bacterial infection of skin lesions develops. Complete disinfection of the environment and isolation of exposed animals are essential to prevent spread to other individuals.

Prevention
Prevention relies mainly on strict hygiene: regular disinfection of pools, terrariums, and equipment, with clean water regularly changed. It is recommended to avoid sharing water, nets, or tools between different pools or terrariums. Animal density should remain reasonable to limit stress and close contact. No vaccine currently exists against ranavirus.
Possible complications
Infection may progress very rapidly to severe multi-organ involvement (liver, kidneys, spleen) and death. Episodes of mass mortality can occur within days in a collection or wild population. Survivors may remain carriers of the virus and transmit it without showing obvious symptoms, which complicates long-term disease control.
