Intestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in tree frogs kept in vivariums. These small worms live in the animal's intestines and feed at its expense.
They are naturally present in small numbers in many wild amphibians without causing major problems. However, in captivity within a confined space, their numbers can multiply significantly and cause serious illness.

An infected tree frog may show no signs for a long time, especially if the infestation is mild.
As the parasite load increases, gradual weight loss may be seen despite maintained appetite, or conversely, loss of appetite.
Digestion can be disrupted: soft stools, changes in the frequency or appearance of droppings. Sometimes tiny threadlike worms are visible to the naked eye in the droppings or near the vent.
The animal may appear less active, more lethargic, with sometimes a swollen belly. In young individuals, stunted growth is possible.

Causes and risk factors
The condition is caused by intestinal nematodes, roundworms belonging to several families that can parasitize amphibians. Some have a direct life cycle (the infectious egg is ingested directly), while others require an intermediate host such as an insect.
In captivity, the direct cycle is often favored: eggs shed in feces contaminate the vivarium substrate, then are re-ingested by the animal, which perpetuates and amplifies the infection over time.
Poor vivarium hygiene is the main risk factor: infrequently changed substrate, droppings left in place, stagnant moisture.
Live prey (insects) collected from the wild or poorly bred can introduce parasites.
High density of animals in a confined space promotes transmission from one individual to another.
Stress, unsuitable temperature or humidity, or unbalanced nutrition weaken natural defenses and favor the development of infestation.
Animals recently purchased or collected from the wild are often at greater risk.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The exotic animal veterinarian typically performs a fecal examination under the microscope (fecal float) to look for worm eggs.
A complete physical examination of the animal is also carried out, taking into account living conditions (temperature, humidity, diet) which often influence the health status of amphibians.
In some cases, additional diagnostic tests may be recommended if the animal's overall condition warrants it.
Treatment
Treatment relies on antiparasitic medications adapted for amphibians, prescribed only by a veterinarian experienced with this species.
Amphibians are highly sensitive to many substances that readily penetrate their skin; self-treatment is therefore dangerous and can be fatal.
Along with medication, complete terrarium cleaning and improved husbandry conditions are essential to prevent immediate reinfection.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Regular terrarium cleaning and prompt removal of droppings significantly reduce the risk of reinfection.
It is recommended to quarantine any new animal before introducing it to an existing terrarium, with a parasitic check by a veterinarian.
Avoid feeding wild-caught prey of unknown health status; choose captive-bred insects instead.
Regular fecal examination, even without symptoms, allows detection of infestation before it becomes severe.

Severe untreated infestation can lead to marked weight loss, dehydration, and overall weakness in the animal.
In young or already compromised animals, this can result in death if left untreated.
Chronic infestation also predisposes to secondary opportunistic infections, as the immune system becomes weakened.
