Intestinal parasitism caused by pinworms is a common digestive infestation in snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina), whether kept in captivity or found in wild animals. Pinworms are small roundworms (nematodes) that live in the turtle's colon.
This infestation is widespread in reptiles, including snapping turtles, and often goes unnoticed when the parasite burden is light. It becomes problematic mainly when the parasite load is high or the turtle is already weakened by other factors (stress, poor husbandry, unsuitable temperatures).

Most turtles carrying pinworms show no visible signs, especially if the infestation is mild.
When signs appear, reduced appetite can be noticed, progressive weight loss despite normal feeding, abnormally soft or liquid stools, sometimes abdominal bloating.
Thin, whitish worms may sometimes be seen directly in the feces or around the cloaca. In young turtles, stunted growth is possible with heavy or prolonged infestation. General lethargy and dehydration may develop in severe cases.

Causes and risk factors
Infestation is caused by pinworm nematodes that colonize the digestive tract, particularly the colon. These parasites have a direct life cycle: eggs are shed in the feces of the infested turtle, become infectious in the environment (water, soil, substrate), then are ingested by another turtle through feeding or by drinking contaminated water.
Keeping multiple turtles in the same tank or enclosure promotes transmission. Poor water and substrate hygiene, stagnant water that is not changed regularly, and repeated contact with feces increase the risk. Young turtles, those under stress, immunocompromised individuals, or those kept at unsuitable temperatures are more prone to showing clinical signs. Introducing a new turtle to an existing group without quarantine or parasite screening is a significant risk factor.
Transmission
Direct transmission through ingestion of eggs present in water, substrate, or food contaminated by infected feces. No transmission to humans or other non-reptile animal species.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian makes a diagnosis through microscopic examination of fecal samples, which reveals pinworm eggs. Multiple samples may be needed because egg shedding can be irregular. A complete physical examination of the turtle is performed to assess its general condition, hydration status, and to identify other possible causes of weight loss or digestive problems.
Treatment
Treatment involves giving an antiparasitic medication suitable for reptiles, prescribed and dosed only by the veterinarian based on the turtle's weight and health status. Supportive care may be provided: correction of dehydration, improvement of housing conditions (temperature, water hygiene), and monitoring of appetite recovery. Follow-up fecal examination is often recommended after treatment to confirm its effectiveness.

Prevention
Good hygiene of the tank or enclosure is essential: regular cleaning of the water, substrate, and areas where feces accumulate. Any new turtle introduced to a group should undergo quarantine and parasite screening before contact with other animals. Regular veterinary checks of fecal samples (fecal examination) help detect infestation before clinical signs appear, especially in breeding facilities or collections with multiple individuals.
Possible complications

Are pinworms from tortoises transmissible to humans?
No, pinworms in tortoises are specific to reptiles and are not transmitted to humans. However, it is still recommended to wash your hands after handling the animal or its enclosure, as a simple general hygiene precaution.
Can a symptom-free tortoise still be infested?
Yes, it's actually very common. Many turtles harbor pinworms in small quantities without showing any signs. A fecal examination remains the only reliable way to detect them.
Can you treat your tortoise yourself with a dewormer bought without veterinary advice?
