Intestinal parasitism is very common in desert iguanas, both in captivity and in the wild.

It involves the presence of one or more parasites (pinworms, coccidia, roundworms, and sometimes protozoa) in the reptile's digestive tract.

A light parasite load is often well tolerated. Problems develop when parasites multiply excessively, particularly during stress, poor housing conditions, or when the immune system is weakened.

Many iguanas carrying parasites show no visible signs for a long time.

When the parasite load becomes heavy, progressive weight loss may be seen despite maintained appetite, or conversely a decrease in appetite.

Stools may become soft, more frequent, sometimes with mucus or worms visible to the naked eye.

A swollen belly, general lethargy, dull and dry skin, and stunted growth in young animals are also possible.
