Intestinal parasitism by nematodes is a common condition in the Perenti monitor lizard, the largest monitor lizard in Australia. These roundworms live in the digestive tract of the reptile and feed partly at its expense. \n\nIn captivity as in the wild, a low parasitic load often remains well tolerated. But in a stressed, young, or already weakened animal, these nematodes can proliferate and sometimes cause severe digestive disease. \n\nThis parasitosis is particularly monitored in monitor lizards kept in captivity (zoological parks, specialized breeders), where promiscuity and shared substrate favor reinfestation.

Clinical signs are often subtle at first, making early detection difficult. \n\nWe can observe a progressive loss of appetite, weight loss despite an apparently normal diet, and a general decline in the animal's vitality. \n\nDigestive disorders are common: loose or diarrheal stools, sometimes with the presence of worms visible to the naked eye, occasional regurgitation, and an abdomen which may appear swollen or tender to palpation. \n\nIn young monitor lizards, growth retardation is possible in the event of a significant and prolonged infestation. Dehydration may set in if diarrhea persists. \n\nIn the most severe cases, the animal may exhibit marked lethargy, refuse all food, and show signs of intestinal obstruction if the parasitic load is very high.

Causes and risk factors
Several genera of nematodes can parasitize the digestive tract of monitor lizards, including roundworms (close to the genus Ophidascaris or Angusticaecum, described in varanids), strongyles, or other nematodes specific to reptiles. \n\nThe life cycle varies depending on the parasitic species: some have a direct cycle (the animal becomes infested by ingesting eggs present in the environment), others require an intermediate host (insect, small rodent or other prey) that the monitor consumes in its naturally carnivorous diet.
The risk is increased in young animals whose immune system is still immature, in monitor lizards stressed by transport, a change of enclosure or unsuitable cohabitation, and in animals immunocompromised by another disease. \n\nIn captivity, a poorly cleaned enclosure, a substrate soiled by faeces, too high a density of animals, and the provision of uncontrolled live prey (insects or wild rodents) clearly increase the risk of contamination and reinfestation. \n\nTemperature and humidity conditions unsuitable for this species native to Australian arid zones can also weaken the animal and make it more vulnerable.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The diagnosis is based on a parasitological examination of the stools (coproscopy), allowing the search for nematode eggs under a microscope. Several repeated examinations may be necessary because egg shedding is not always constant. \n\nThe veterinarian can complete the examination with a general clinical observation, abdominal palpation, and in certain cases imaging examinations (radiography) if an occlusion or a significant parasitic mass is suspected. \n\nA blood test can help assess the general condition of the animal and detect possible associated anemia or dehydration.
Treatment
The treatment uses antiparasitics specific to nematodes, prescribed and adapted by a veterinarian familiar with the particular physiology of reptiles. \n\nSupportive treatment may be associated depending on the animal's condition: rehydration, nutritional support, and correction of breeding conditions (temperature, humidity) to promote healing. \n\nA parasitological check after treatment is essential to check effectiveness and detect possible resistance or reinfestation.

Prevention
Prevention is based above all on rigorous hygiene of the enclosure: regular cleaning and disinfection, rapid removal of feces, and appropriate management of the substrate. \n\nIt is recommended to control the origin of the given prey (farmed insects or rodents rather than wild ones) to limit the introduction of parasites via an intermediate host. \n\nParasitological examinations of stools carried out periodically by a veterinarian specializing in reptiles allow early detection, before the appearance of clinical symptoms. \n\nThe quarantine of any new animal introduced into a collection, with parasitic screening before integration, is an essential measure in zoological structures and among breeders.
Possible complications
If left untreated, a massive infestation can lead to intestinal obstruction, digestive perforation, or severe dehydration, putting the animal's life at risk. \n\nChronic weight loss and general weakening can also make the monitor lizard more vulnerable to other opportunistic infections.

Prognosis
The prognosis is generally favorable when the parasitosis is detected early and treated appropriately. \n\nSevere cases with intestinal obstruction or significant dehydration require urgent treatment and the prognosis then becomes more guarded, particularly in young animals or already weakened subjects.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Perenti monitor lizard carry nematodes without being sick?
Yes, a low parasite load is often well tolerated and causes no visible symptoms. It is above all a significant proliferation, favored by stress or weakening, which becomes problematic.
Can you see worms directly in the stool?
In some cases yes, especially during major infestations. But the absence of visible worms does not mean that the animal is unharmed: only an examination of the stool under a microscope can confirm or exclude an infestation.
Should we systematically treat all the monitor lizards in a collection?
This decision is made by the veterinarian, who assesses the situation according to the results of the parasitological examinations of each animal. Blind treatment without diagnosis is not recommended.
Are live prey dangerous for transmission?
Yes, some nematodes use insects or small rodents as intermediate hosts. Favoring prey from controlled breeding reduces this risk.
