The whale shark (Rhincodon typus), the largest fish in the world, frequently hosts small parasitic crustaceans called copepods, as well as other related crustaceans, on its skin. These organisms attach to the skin surface, often near the eyes, fins, or gill slits, and feed on mucus or superficial tissues. This phenomenon is very common in large sharks and is generally not considered serious, but a heavy infestation can cause local skin irritation.

Small organisms attached to the whale shark's skin are often observed while diving or in aquarium settings, particularly around the eyes, on the fins, or near the gill slits. These parasites may appear as small whitish to grayish dots or filaments. The skin around the attachment site may sometimes appear slightly irritated or reddened. The animal generally shows no notable change in behavior, with normal swimming and feeding even when parasites are present.

Causes and risk factors
The condition results from the attachment of external parasitic crustaceans, mainly copepods (particularly those of the genus Pandarus and related genera) and sometimes other crustaceans such as certain isopods. These organisms attach to the whale shark's thick skin, often around the eyes, gill slits, fins, or in skin folds, using hooks or specialized anchoring structures. They feed on mucus, skin, or blood from their host without necessarily causing death, which constitutes an external parasitic relationship (ectoparasitism).
Whale sharks living in areas rich in plankton and marine biodiversity, where they spend considerable time near the surface filter-feeding, face greater risk of these crustaceans attaching to their skin. Skin already damaged from an injury, rubbing against a boat, or other causes can also make it easier for parasites to establish themselves in that area.
Transmission
Transmission occurs through direct contact in seawater: free-living copepod larvae (nauplius stage followed by copepodite stage) swim freely before finding a host such as the whale shark, to which they attach and mature into adults. There is no transmission between whale sharks and humans or other terrestrial species.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is primarily visual, made by divers, marine biologists, or caregivers in public aquariums during direct observation of the animal. The parasites, often large for copepods, are visible to the naked eye attached to the skin, fins, or near the eyes and blowholes. In dolphinaria or large aquariums, an aquatic veterinarian specialist can examine the animal more closely, sometimes using underwater photographs or videos, to assess the number of parasites and skin condition around the attachment sites. Sampling the parasite itself allows precise species identification by a marine parasitology specialist.
Treatment
In the wild, no treatment is given, as this parasitism is considered a normal ecological phenomenon. In captivity, if excessive parasite load is found, an aquatic veterinarian specialist may consider using antiparasitic agents suitable for the marine aquatic environment, under strict monitoring of water quality, as well as local skin care if associated lesions are present.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
In the wild, no prevention is possible or necessary, as this phenomenon is a normal ecological interaction between the whale shark and its marine environment. In public aquariums, water quality, efficient filtration, and regular monitoring of the animals' skin help limit excessive parasite development and allow early detection.
Possible complications
In most cases, infestation remains superficial and is well tolerated by this very large animal. However, a heavy parasite load can cause local irritation, small wounds, or skin inflammation at the attachment sites. These lesions can sometimes become secondarily infected by bacteria or facilitate colonization by algae or other organisms on damaged skin. Involvement near the eyes can cause visual discomfort or eye irritation.

The prognosis is excellent in the vast majority of cases. The whale shark, because of its immense size and thick skin, tolerates moderate parasitic load very well. Only rare, massive infestations or secondary complications such as wound infection could locally affect the animal's wellbeing, without threatening its survival.

Does the whale shark suffer because of these parasites?
