Barnacles are chiefly known as crustaceans that attach to boat hulls, rocks, or seashells. They are not typical parasites of domestic animals, but certain related crustacean species can parasitize other marine animals such as sea turtles, whales, or certain crabs.
In this context, we are dealing with the opposite problem: barnacles or parasitic crustaceans that settle ON a host animal (sea turtle, whale, crab) and cause it discomfort.
This sheet describes this phenomenon from a general perspective, useful for understanding why certain marine animals presented in exotic consultation carry barnacles or related crustaceans fixed to their bodies.

In the host animal bearing them (sea turtle, whale, large crab), clusters of hard, whitish formations fixed to the shell, skin, or fins may be observed.
These attachments in large numbers can hamper swimming, cause local irritation, or even wound the skin if the animal rubs against the environment in an attempt to remove them.
For the barnacle itself, there is no "disease" as such: it is an organism that lives attached, filtering water to feed. The health concern applies to the animal bearing it, not to the barnacle.

Causes and risk factors
Barnacle larvae drift in seawater before attaching permanently to a hard surface: rock, hull, shell, or skin/shell of a marine animal.
Once attached, they develop and form their characteristic calcareous shell, remaining fixed for life.
Certain more specialized parasitic crustaceans (such as certain barnacles of the genus Sacculina in crabs) go further and actually penetrate the host's tissues to feed on it, disrupting its growth and reproduction.
Animals with rough skin or shell, slow swimming, or remaining motionless for long periods (aged sea turtles, whales, large crabs) are more exposed.
Warm, plankton-rich waters favor the presence of barnacle larvae.
A weakened or sick animal moves less and accumulates more attachments.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian or specialist care provider performs a visual examination of the animal, observes the distribution and density of barnacles, and evaluates whether they are causing functional impairment (swimming, breathing, skin wounds).
Expert advice from a marine wildlife specialist or exotic animal medicine practitioner is often needed to distinguish a harmless presence from a more problematic infestation.
Treatment
Gentle mechanical removal of excess barnacles may be performed by trained professionals, particularly when caring for injured or stranded sea turtles.
No specific medication is used against the barnacles themselves.
Treatment focuses mainly on skin lesions or irritation possibly caused by the animal rubbing against its surroundings.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
There is no specific prevention for a wild animal.
In captivity (pool, aquarium), good maintenance of the water and the animal's skin/shell, along with regular monitoring, limit excessive barnacle buildup.
Gentle mechanical cleaning of turtle shells during care is sometimes performed by specialized teams.
Possible complications
Significant accumulation can impair the animal's swimming ability and hydrodynamics, increase its fatigue, and promote secondary skin irritation or wounds.
In crabs parasitized by specialized cirripedes such as Sacculina, reproduction and host growth may be severely disrupted.

Discovery of a marine animal carrying a large number of barnacles associated with signs of weakness.
Presence of wounds or irritated skin around the areas of attachment.
Marine animal that is stranded or having difficulty swimming.
Uncertainty about the nature of a mass fixed to an animal's shell or skin.
Prognosis
The prognosis depends primarily on the overall condition of the animal host, not on the barnacles themselves.
Moderate infestation is generally well tolerated.
Massive accumulation associated with weakening of the animal requires specialized care at a marine wildlife rehabilitation center.
