Affected animals show diarrhea that can be severe, sometimes with blood present. Affected animals frequently display lethargy, loss of appetite, and rapid weight loss in young individuals. Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by a parvovirus, a virus highly resistant in the environment. This virus attacks primarily rapidly dividing cells, such as those of the intestinal wall, which explains the severe diarrhea. Young mink not protected by maternal antibodies are the most vulnerable.
Young mink recently weaned or lacking adequate maternal protection are most at risk. High stocking density in mink farms promotes rapid virus spread. Poor hygiene or inadequate disinfection of housing also increases risk.
