Pecking and cannibalism are common behavioral disorders among Japanese quail raised in captivity. The animal repeatedly pecks the feathers, skin, cloaca or toes of its conspecifics. In severe cases, these injuries can lead to the death of the attacked bird. It is not an infectious disease but a behavioral disorder with multiple causes, often linked to breeding conditions.

The first signs are torn or damaged feathers, especially on the back, tail and head. We then observe areas of bare skin, reddened or scratched. The cloaca (laying area) is a common target, especially in newly laid quail, as it remains temporarily swollen and pink after the egg. Open wounds, sometimes with a little blood, attract more attention from other quails and aggravate the phenomenon. In severe cases, the attacked bird may die from hemorrhage or exhaustion. Aggressive quails show insistent chasing and pecking behavior towards certain conspecifics.

Causes and risk factors
Pecking most often results from a combination of stress factors and an imbalance in the living environment rather than from a single cause. Overcrowding in cages is one of the main causes: less living space increases contact and tensions between individuals. Too intense lighting or too long a lighting duration stimulates activity and aggression. An unbalanced diet, including a lack of protein or certain amino acids like methionine, as well as a salt deficiency, can cause quail to peck at feathers or blood to compensate. Boredom, the absence of occupation or material to peck also promotes this redirected behavior. Finally, the presence of visible blood on an injured quail triggers an attraction reflex in others, which maintains the cycle.
Too high stocking density, overcrowded cages, too intense or prolonged lighting, excessive heat, insufficient ventilation, poorly formulated or deficient feed, lack of access to water or food causing competition, lack of enrichment of the environment, intense laying period, presence of an injured or sick quail in the group, sudden change of environment or group.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The diagnosis is based primarily on direct observation of behavior and lesions by the breeder, confirmed if necessary by a veterinarian. This examines the feathers and skin of the quails, evaluates the rearing conditions (density, light, diet) and rules out other possible causes of skin lesions such as external parasites or specific deficiencies. An examination of the group makes it possible to identify the aggressor individuals and the victims.
Treatment
The treatment is essentially environmental and not medicinal: reduction of density, adjustment of lighting, correction of food ration and isolation of injured or overly aggressive birds. On wounds, a local antiseptic can be applied to avoid secondary infections. In certain farms, a temporary adjustment of the beak (trimming) is carried out preventively by qualified personnel, but this practice must remain supervised and is not systematic. A veterinarian can refer for a complete review of the food formulation if a deficiency is suspected.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Adapting the breeding density while respecting sufficient space per bird greatly limits tensions. Reducing light intensity and avoiding continuous lighting helps calm the group; dim red lighting is sometimes used because it makes the blood less visible and therefore less attractive. Ensuring a complete and balanced diet, adapted to the physiological stage of the quail, with a correct intake of proteins, amino acids and minerals, reduces the deficiencies causing pecking. Providing something to occupy the birds, such as pecking materials, limits boredom. Quickly removing any injured quail from the group prevents cannibalism from escalating. Good ventilation and a suitable temperature limit thermal stress.
Possible complications
Wounds can become infected and progress to an abscess or septicemia. Repeated attacks cause chronic stress, reduced egg laying and stunted growth in the young. In the most serious cases, the attacked quail dies from its injuries or exhaustion. The phenomenon can also spread to the entire group if nothing is corrected.
