Polar bear pneumonia is inflammation of the lungs, usually caused by infection. It primarily affects polar bears living in captivity (zoos, rehabilitation centers), where it is documented more regularly than in wild animals. The disease remains rare but can progress rapidly, especially in young, elderly, or weakened bears.
As in other large carnivores, lung infection may be caused by bacteria, sometimes associated with respiratory viruses or pulmonary parasites. The species' naturally cold climate does not prevent the disease from occurring, particularly during stress, transport, or environmental changes.

Early signs are often subtle: the bear becomes more tired than usual, eats less, and may appear listless.
As the disease progresses, a cough develops, sometimes accompanied by nasal discharge. Breathing becomes faster or more labored; the animal may breathe with its mouth slightly open or adopt a particular posture to breathe more easily.
Fever is common. In severe cases, mucous membranes (gums, inside of the lips) may appear pale or bluish from lack of oxygen, which is a sign of severity.

Causes and risk factors
Several agents may be involved, alone or in combination: opportunistic bacteria taking advantage of the animal's weakened state, respiratory viruses, or more rarely pulmonary parasites (roundworms). Pneumonia can also develop after aspiration (inhalation of food or liquid into the lungs) or as a complication of another disease that weakens the body's defenses.
Young age and advanced age are vulnerability factors. Stress from transport, enclosure changes, or handling can also play a role. A damp, poorly ventilated environment or one with inappropriate temperature promotes the spread of infectious agents. An underlying disease that weakens the immune system also increases risk.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on clinical examination by a veterinarian specializing in exotic or wild animals, supplemented if possible by auscultation, blood tests, and chest imaging (radiography). Samples from the respiratory tract may be analyzed in a laboratory to identify the causative agent and guide treatment.
Treatment
Treatment generally relies on antibiotics appropriate to the identified agent, possibly combined with anti-inflammatory medications, supportive care (fluid therapy, oxygen therapy), and strict rest in a calm and suitable environment. Management must always be decided and monitored by a specialized veterinarian.

Prevention
Prevention relies on appropriate housing conditions: proper ventilation, clean enclosures, stress management during handling and transport. Regular veterinary monitoring allows early detection of any signs of weakness or early respiratory disease. Quarantine and health monitoring of new arrivals at a facility also help limit the introduction of infectious agents.
Possible complications
Without treatment, pneumonia can progress to severe respiratory failure, sepsis (generalized infection), or death. Chronic lung complications are possible following a severe episode.

Prognosis
