Sloth pneumonia is a lung infection commonly affecting three-toed sloths, particularly in captivity or after significant stress. \n\nThis species has a very slow metabolism and a low and variable body temperature, making it particularly vulnerable to respiratory infections. \nPneumonia is a leading cause of illness and mortality among sloths kept in care centers, zoos or seized during wildlife trafficking.

The signs are often discreet at first because the sloth does not move naturally, which delays detection. \nWe may observe faster or more labored breathing, sometimes abnormal breathing sounds such as groans or wheezing. \nA runny nose, a slight cough, and more lethargy than usual are warning signs. \nThe animal eats less, loses interest in its environment, and may present an abnormal body temperature (the species already has limited thermoregulation, a frank fever is rare but profound depression is common).

Causes and risk factors
Pneumonia can be caused by opportunistic bacteria, sometimes associated with viruses or fungi, taking advantage of a weakened immune system. \nCold, excessive humidity, poor ventilation of the enclosure, or stressful transport are common triggers. \nIn wild animals collected after a tree fall, electrocution or traumatic shock, stress and internal injuries also favor the appearance of secondary pulmonary infections.
Young orphaned sloths, animals stressed after capture or transport, and those kept in unsuitable temperature or humidity conditions are most at risk. \nA sudden change in environment, an unsuitable diet leading to malnutrition, or immunosuppression linked to other diseases also increase the risk.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian performs a complete clinical examination including pulmonary auscultation. \nChest x-rays make it possible to visualize possible areas of pulmonary consolidation. \nBlood tests and sometimes bronchoalveolar washing or a bacterial culture sample help identify the causative agent and guide treatment.
Treatment
Treatment is generally based on antibiotic therapy adapted to the identified agent, combined with general support: controlled warming, fluid therapy in the event of dehydration, and nutritional support. \nBronchodilators or anti-inflammatories may be used depending on the veterinarian's assessment. \nA calm, warm and low-stress environment is an integral part of care.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Maintaining a stable ambient temperature appropriate to the species, as well as a controlled humidity level, are essential in captivity. \nLimiting stressful handling, ensuring appropriate quarantine for new arrivals, and guaranteeing appropriate nutrition strengthen the animal's natural defenses. \nRegular monitoring by a veterinarian specializing in exotic animals allows early detection.
Possible complications
If left untreated, pneumonia can progress to severe respiratory failure, sepsis (generalized infection) and death. \nThe slow metabolism of the species can also mask the worsening until an advanced stage, making the prognosis more guarded.
