Fin rot is a common bacterial disease in sea bream (Sparus aurata) raised in ponds or sea cages. The condition causes progressive deterioration of the fin edges, which become frayed and gradually disappear in places. The disease primarily affects fish weakened by poor rearing conditions, injury, or high stocking density. It is widespread in Mediterranean aquaculture, including in Tunisia, where sea bream farming is common.

The fins, especially the tail and pectoral fins, develop irregular, frayed, or whitish edges. The fin rays may become exposed and turn brittle. Poor water quality—low oxygen levels, high ammonia, or elevated nitrites—favors the disease. Overstocking fish in ponds or cages increases stress and contact, raising the risk of injury and transmission. Sudden temperature swings, inadequate filtration, and repeated fish handling are contributing factors. Fish already weakened by another illness or parasites are more susceptible.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly through contaminated water and direct contact between fish in the same pond or cage. Contaminated farming equipment can also spread bacteria from one pond to another.
