Fin rot is a bacterial infection that damages the edges of a flounder's fins. It is common in farmed flatfish or in wild-caught fish held in poor captive conditions. Also known as "fin rot" in aquaculture, the disease progressively destroys the fin rays and tissue, starting from the fin tips.
It primarily affects weakened or stressed fish, or those living in poor water quality. Without treatment, the infection can spread toward the base of the fin and then reach the fish's body.

The most obvious sign is ragged edges on the affected fins, which appear irregular, "eaten away," or frayed. The affected area may become whitish, grayish, or reddish depending on the stage.
The dorsal fin and tail fin are usually the first to be affected, as they are most exposed to friction against the tank bottom or walls.
In more severely affected animals, swimming becomes sluggish, the fish retreats to the bottom, appetite decreases, and the skin appears dull. In advanced cases, infection can spread to the fin base and cause local inflammation or even skin ulceration in the surrounding area.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by opportunistic bacteria, most commonly from the genera Vibrio, Aeromonas, or Pseudomonas, which naturally occur in seawater or farm tanks. These bacteria take advantage of minor wounds or weakening in the fish to colonize fin tissue.
Stress from transport, handling, overcrowding in farm tanks, or poor water quality creates conditions favoring the infection.
The main risk factors are poor water quality (high ammonia and nitrite levels, inadequate oxygenation), overcrowding in farm tanks, injuries from friction against the bottom or walls, stress from handling or transport, and water temperature unsuitable for the species.
Flounder recently captured or transferred from one environment to another are particularly vulnerable during the acclimation period.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian or aquaculture specialist examines the appearance of the fins and the fish's overall condition. A swab from the affected area may be taken to identify the causative bacterium by culture, which helps guide treatment selection.
Analysis of the tank water quality is part of the assessment, as it allows identification of predisposing factors that need to be corrected.
Treatment
Management combines correction of water parameters and, if needed, an antibacterial treatment appropriate to the identified bacterium, administered through medicated bath or systemically depending on the case. Local antiseptic products may also be used to disinfect the affected areas.
Treatment must always be decided and supervised by a veterinarian or fish pathology specialist, as some products are toxic to invertebrates or disrupt the tank's biological balance.

Prevention
Prevention relies first and foremost on good water quality management: effective filtration, regular water changes, and monitoring of key parameters (ammonia, nitrite, dissolved oxygen, temperature).
It is recommended to limit fish stocking density in tanks, handle fish carefully to prevent injuries, and quarantine new fish before introducing them into a shared tank.
A suitable tank substrate without sharp edges reduces traumatic friction that can trigger the disease.
Possible complications
If left untreated, the infection can progress to the base of the fin and destroy supporting tissue, causing permanent fin deformity. The infection may also spread to surrounding skin and then become systemic, with a risk of potentially fatal septicemia.
A fish weakened by fin rot becomes more vulnerable to secondary infections, particularly fungal ones.
